As @Kinghambranch says, it's next on the list, also along with a roller shutter door for the Barn. We know we can make better use of Winchcombe yard and long term plans have been discussed for a couple of years now, such that once Broadway is finished and the money is rolling in we can crack on with it. As for extensions over carriage sheds, well before Broadway we're just about keeping up with keeping all our main running coaches looking nice, its the added rakes of coaches that are required for Broadway that makes a carriage shed more important!

Hopefully the additional income from the extension will help fund it, one of the reasons it is sensible that it is built first. Some undercover accommodation for the running rakes along with the paint shop and other facilities at Winchcombe will really be in contrast to the very early days when I can remember one of the first MK1's to be repainted was done in the open using house paint! To see the C&W develop since then has been impressive and I have every confidence in the continued improvements in the future.

Longer term it's good to see other railways also thinking about putting their carriages under cover as part of their future plans.

Exactly. Yes, we could have had one before, but soon we can perhaps afford something a bit better, and properly integrate it within the site along with new workshops for S+T and B+S once some more of the detritus has been removed from site (this is ongoing but out of our hands).

Yes, the days of painting only one side of a carriage in house paint has long gone although it was only a few years before I joined that the head painter decided we could afford two topcoats! :O

A photo of one of the "house painted" Mk 1s on a pre-reopening test train south of Toddington in early April 1984. The chocolate section was still awaited and, if I recall, the other side of the coach was still in BR Blue/Grey/Rust when the 1st public service train ran. The motive power was Avonside 0-4-0ST Cadbury No1, the most disappointing non-puffing puffer I've ever witnessed. I called it "hissing Sid" amongst other unprintable names. Still, it was a start.

Hey don't knock it, Cadbury may not of been lively but along with the half painted coach, it was was what ignited the spark for me. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't be on this forum right now so for me it was a start in more ways than one :)

Rolling stock covered accommodation reduces maintenance costs and enables the quality of the offering to be increased. You need to be very sure there will a sustained increase in business as a result of extending with consequential increase of operating costs.

I am all for romanticism but not the starry eyed variety.

We are very sure. And perfectly aware of the advantages of a carriage shed, hence why it is on the cards.

I'm quite sure extending to the tourist honeypot that is Broadway will exceed expectations in the amount of business generated.

Going from somewhere to somewhere else does better than going from somewhere to the middle of nowhere, just ask Embsay, the NYMR etc.

Regarding Winchcombe and a possible carriage shed. Is there still the 'issue' with the family living free gratis in a static caravan on the site ?

When Steamport closed & moved to become Ribble Steam Railway in Preston in year 2000, extremely high on the list of to dos was secure covered accommodation for all the locos & all of the carriages.
Now with over 50 locos on site, we have only 3 outside, a Crane Tank which is sadly too high to fit the loading gauge of the buildings, a loco which has sat outside at other locations since the 60s/70s with no removable parts & a third loco, which again is currently a frame & wheels.
All of the above having been paid for by RSR's own funding.

Assumptions about what?? Bolton Abbey and Whitby have certainly been major revenue generators for those railways

Assumptions about location x based upon what happened at location y. Not everywhere has sustained the increase in trade experienced immediately after the opening of extra mileage.

Also don't ignore comments about cost of travel. These can come from dedicated visitors to steam railways. I heard some such the other day about a specific railway (which would be unfair to name).

Agreed Paul. But looking at this specific case, surely you can't seriously be suggesting that it's no less than extremely likely that the GWSR will see increased passenger figures once we get to Broadway? I'd happily wager you, loser pays to the other's heritage railway charity... :D

Might I suggest that the goal posts are firmly set in concrete before any money gets put on the table!
