33 over Marsden just before Standedge Tunnel. The sound was terrific all the way from Huddersfield.

If you say so Ralph, thanks for clearing it up though :)
Cracking tour by all accounts, sure it has exceeded all expectations of those on board.

Guide Bridge. The end of a fine set of climbs and a rare blast between Huddersfield and Stalybridge.

Could even be heard clearly from the cheap seats! 60163 has been impressive throughout.

Good run up long drag but little time regained. Thro Appleby in 41m 25 and Ais Gill summit 64m 55s.

62 at Ormside viaduct fell to 38 after Helm Tnl, recovered to 52 after Crosby Garrett, 37 after Birkett Tnl, 45 Mallerstang and min 35 or 36 before Ais Gill.

Stuck behind stopper from Skipton then another from Ilkley.

Good run up Standedge. Max 43 Slaithwaite and 34 min at Marsden.

    Now watering at Denton.

Attempts to make up time with quick watering at Denton definitely unsuccessful!

That recovery after Crosby and at Mallerstang was impressive. At one point I thought we was on for 45+ over the top, then the conditions and grade took hold.

Thought I would give going in the field a miss as LNE A1 Class 4-6-2 No. 60163 'Tornado' works away from Birkbeck Viaduct and approaches Greenholme
with the northbound 'Border Raider' rail tour to Carlisle

Running from Stockport has indeed been vigorous! Got a little lucky being able to nip in front of the local and have taken full advantage.

Amazing bit of recovery at the end; almost as though it was planned!

Overall, it has been one of those rare trips that encompasses a series of difficult or rarely-covered routes. There was new track for me almost straight from the off:

Aston to Proof House Jc.; New Street to Stafford; the new slow lines at Norton Bridge; Heaton Lodge E. Jc. to Denton Jc.; and a couple of other odds and sods after Wolverhampton on the return.

All in all, very enjoyable, 60163 and crew performed faultlessly, and apart from the final hour, it didn't feel like the 458 mile marathon it was. I hope Standedge gets another look-in one day. A day to be on the train.

    Yes that worked out well.

Solid climb up Madeley, got up to 50 around Betley Road then fell back to 47 min.

Impressive performance throughout. There could be no easing up of effort right until the end. Plenty of curtains twitching on that climb up to the tunnel between Perry Bar and Soho. We even managed a parallel arrival and departure from New Street with 66 129 on a Kingswear to Burton return special.

Yes I will be typing it all up. But not tomorrow.

Superlative throughout today. Worth mentioning that it was all achieved with about 510 tons gross on the drawbar.

Despite the upside down WCML today that led to us being looped twice at Barton and Oxenholme it was a very measured performance to Carlisle with, by all accounts, Tornado not being extended at all yet sauntering over Shap at 35. We even slipped in an even time run between Barton Loop and when we stopped at the signal before turning into Oxenholme Loop. The run over Ais Gill was also deceptively quick. Running time from Carlisle to Long Preston was only 96 minutes with 35 over Ais Gill although there was power in hand as demonstrated by a few faster elements in the climb. And then there was Standedge!

Careful management of loco and resources throughout the day with water stops just as long as necessary. We took on coal at Denton as well as water...just to be careful for the final leg.....and back on time even with our zig zag of a route to get home around Birmingham.

Well done everyone....crew, support crew and Tornado. And well done also to the A1ST (Graeme Bunker) for sorting out a path back via Leeds that Network Rail could live with, and that we more or less kept.

As Black Country Lad, and as someone who had to use the mainline cut as a way to get to work, a few years ago that is a cracking photo. Geographically I think that's in a sort of no mans land as the left hand side of the mainline canal is West Bromwich, and the right is Oldbury/ Smethwick, and your smack over The mainline cut there.
