Never really thought about it and I suppose as a consequence never realised that. Was that from new?

As for the topic, BIL looks fantastic and I'm sure once the initial teething troubles and first few runs under her belt preservation will have another star on its hands.

Very likely - it was an idea formed from Bulleid's time on the LNER. It was developed for the middle big end on the Gresley A4 Pacifics, and all subsequent LNER Pacifics received the stink bomb idea. Other engines fitted included the D49s, the P2s and V2s, I believe.

Footage of 35018 yesterday morning at Starricks Farm and Clapham Moor, the latter shot just following the restart after it slipped to a stand.

So sorry to hear about the big end problem, and hope 35018 is back in service soon. Very, very well done to the restoration team!!!! She looks fantastic, perfect in every way.....right down to the water treatment triangle on the cabside (which too many preserved Bulleids don't have!) Brilliant work, can't wait to see her back and ride behind her.

Interesting, I'd always associated the stink bombs with Gresley and didn't know Bulleid had been involved in the development.

With 35018 now needing repair, as the NYMR is close at hand, once the big end is done would it make sence to take her there and sort her out,Its going to be easier to do this away from the main network , either that or the ELR, where prehaps Riley can fettle her? on a non runing day, you can run her up and down and discover where the leak is, and how to fix it, something you cant do in the confines of Carnforth AS clearly what ever Carnforth are attempting to do isnt working, most likely because they dont have somewhere they can get the engine to a speed where they can carry out a proper forensic exam of the front right end.

The NYMR isn't that close by rail.

ELR then, but the actual location isnt important what is is taking the loco somewhere where the problem with the bad steam leak can be safety investigated off the main network without the danger of a failure blocking an NR route .

The facility to repair 35018 is the NRM, unrealistic to move the loco anywhere else, NYMR what, 70 miles by rail, similarly ELR ? to achieve what ? May as well repair it at the NRM, test it E+POB+DL to Carnforth maybe 100 miles, nice running in job, without involving any one else ! WCR staff are well able to cure these, that are, after all, relatively minor, teething problems, let them do their job and, by the way, this is not a 'bad' steam leak, it would certainly not fail due to it.

You ought to realise by now that there is no possible untoward occurrence in preservation that won't automatically cause certain people to devise elaborate schemes that require redistribution of other people's expensive assets.

I think you may be mis understanding what i mean, do the repairs at The NRM, by all means, then have the fine tuning done away from the main line, to get her right, so when she returns to Carnforth she is 100 per cent on song, i'm not saying Carnforth cant do it, but that other people, who happen to have a very good relationship such as Ian Riley, who is well known as being very good on setting engines up as its enroute on the way back could maybe look at the timing issues

Yes, you are right. They were certainly around when the A3 pacifics were new builds, before 2509 came along.

They did not have them from new, they were fitted either at or shortly after rebuilding.

Vaguely on the subject of A4s, hot big ends and the like, around the time of Bittern's 90mph runs an A4 enthusiast I know got chatting to Frank Boait at Ropley and, as you do, promptly steered the conversation round to Bittern. Somewhere along the way, the story was told that on an early loaded test run Bittern had run a hot middle big end, somewhere near Bristol I think. Discussion ensued, and it was decided that the best option was to fail the loco and retreat to the nearest EWS depot. So Frank ended up re-fitting Bittern's inside big end in a diesel depot, without a pit, before she could be brought back to Ropley. Apparently, the bearing re-fitted in such less-than-ideal circumstances had then caused no further trouble and had no further attention, certainly up until the 90mph runs, which were a fair way into Bittern's mainline career.

I suppose the short version is that a hot inside big end is hardly unprecedented on an engine still running in, 35018 is surely in a much better location for a bit of remedial work than a diesel depot and I'm sure she'll work out just fine before long.
