Joking aside, I think a photography "hide" at certain locations isn't a bad idea

Perhaps a policy along these lines:

    * Photography is encouraged from all the public accessible areas.

    * Photography in this privately-owned facility is a privilege, not a right.

    * Do not try to access restricted areas. There is danger of death.

    * Photographers and other visitors must obey any directions issued by members of staff at all times. Failure to do so may result in removal of all rights of access.

    * Photographers must not restrict the enjoyment of the facilities for other visitors.

Railways have always been a great free show , it's up to the Railways to find ways to prise the money out of people's pockets...

For once I agree with you. See my earlier post. No one has any idea if the bloke standing in the field is a freeloader or a major contributor.

I was being ironic, and referencing posts 1 and 3 in this thread. The irony being that by enjoying someone else's photographs available on the internet, I become the freeloader....

Would it be perverse of me to ask if anyone could please render a B&W photograph of "Lyn" and train at the restored Woody Bay? (Call it an anchor point to link this fantastic acheivement to images we've all seen of the old L&B). Thanks in advance.

Now someone is going to point out that old Lyn didn't get a Southern paint job til 1929, by which time the coaching stock would have been painted green long since. On todays L&B the carriages are rather splendid in pre grouping colours.

Try this. I've tweaked down the contrast a bit to give it a more vintage look. I've got this as a screensaver, alternating between this, and the classic view of the last train entering Woody Bay, saddo that I am! Mark. IMG_20171001_104353_196.jpg

I guess someone adapt in photoshop (I can't even afford the program!) could remove the carriage logos, and 'paint' the top half to match the bottom, and then you have the Southern look on the coaches too! :)

Perhaps..... but Mark's photo looks wonderfully atmospheric as is. Shame Van 23 isn't back yet (patience, Howard.... patience!). Once that happy day dawns, we'll be able to see the archetypical L&B train for ourselves.

I don't know how rapidly the Southern repainted L&B stock, but do recall reading that the paint finish on stock at grouping was excellent, with a note that no galloping hurry was essential. Newly built "Lew" was apparently the first loco in SR livery, but I've seen nothing regarding repainting stock. AFAIK, "Lyn" - the original one! - was the only item of L&B kit to leave the line for any work and Pilton certainly couldn't have handled repainting all the carriages and wagons too rapidly. I'd expect reliverying was done as stock came through for repairs. Wasn't the initial SR emphasis on re-sleepering and fencing repairs?

By the time of the grouping were all the carriages in the simpler all-over red/brown, or were some still in the two-tone livery?

Getting a bit O/T as its hardly "L&B today", but it tought I'd share this delightful snap I've just found: children_lynton2.jpg it was taken, I think, in 1934, and is from a book by Henry Williamson, called "Children of Shallowford"

It was apparently a very gradual process. I think some carriages were still two-tone at the time SR took over. I also heard that there was still some goods stock in L&B grey livery when the line closed in 1935!

Not sure if in original grey, or the later SR livery worn through. I've got a photo of four wheel van No. 7, taken in 1935, clearly in SR livery, but also clearly showing "L&BR No. " on the doors.

    Hi
Wonderful old photos of Woody Bay. I came across this one from 1929/1930 (I guess) with the first carriage having been redone in green(?), although rest of train looks still to be in L&B livery. Looks a bit of a rushed job to me- maybe the paint hadn't dried properly- certainly not up to normal Pilton standards.
