As and when the C&W projects all come to fruition, it sounds as if a successful bid for Ashey Station building (next time it comes on the market) and reinstating the loop there will be needed ... especially, and let's be optimistic here, when Smallbrook - Ryde St.Johns Road comes to pass. The metal bashing and grinding dept will need to get their finger out too. There's already quite a lot to keep in steam as it is these days! :)

Well yes there is - the ride would certainly be better on a 6 wheel underframe.

I would use some of the old underframes from assorted Southern Railway coaches to build replicas of extinct Southern rolling stock.

I don't think SR carriage underframes are any too plentiful these days, certainly examples with no bodywork. If the wider heritage movement can manage a full loco from the rails up, it's a fairly safe bet a complete carriage or ten wouldn't be beyond the pale.

Recreating missing stock is a noble aim (and if a dedicated group can organise a successful project, then I say good luck to 'em), but for the railways themselves, perhaps one best tackled after the numerous designs which will themselves need recreating if grounded bodies aren't ungrounded in time.

WIBN is beginning to raise its ugly little head, at least as far as the IOW is concerned. Any six wheeled carriages had the centre axles removed before transhipment. The one exception was the Central's ex Midland travelling crane which is six wheeled to this day

It is an LP by a 1960 popular beat combo from the good old U.S of A.

WIBN.... actually, WIBVNI ('very' and 'indeed', before anyone asks!). However.... I beg to differ on the existence of 6 wheel passenger stock. Oh yes it did!!

In 1887 (after over a year of haggling over price) the IWR board sanctioned purchase of three Oldbury vehicles originally supplied to the Golden Valley Railway in 1881 and returned to the maker in 1885 due to the closure of that line. Maycock & Silsbury provide the following description: "Two of the Golden Valley Railway carriages were six-wheeled saloons; one seated first class and the other second class passengers. They had open balconies at each end surrounded by ironwork bearing the initials 'G.V.' ....... The centre set of wheels were suspended from the outside of the solebars to give exta sideplay." A matching 4w guards van with one similar balcony completed the set, which was used on Bembridge services. Numbered 43-45 in the IWR list, they were certainly still in service in 1911, though those numbers seem to have been allocated to ex-NLR stock by grouping. The grounded corpse of the brake van was photographed in 1936 at Carpenters siding.

There's a photo of IWR "Ryde" with this trio taken at Bembridge in 1911*, where the saloons very obviously remain 6 wheeled. So yes..... clearly wish list, rather than shopping list, but a very attractive little set nonetheless.

*"Isle of Wight Steam Passenger Rolling Stock" Oakwood X59 p16 and the same photo is reproduced rather larger on p98 of "Portrait of the Isle of Wight Railways" by Handel Kardas.

Wouldst that fortune of circumstance one day let mine own eyes lay upon the fair countenance of thine own splendid railway, grown not from the kernel of miserable necessity, but from the dreams of dreamers!

(Please forgive the unduly romantic overtones of my post :D)

Yes indeed! I had forgotten that rather odd looking pair which.I suppose would be unlikely to have ventured round the Esplanade curve unlike the erstwhile six wheelers brought in by the SR.

That is is more Rococo than Romantic. WIBN involves a steadfast refusal to learn from the past experience of others.
