Bye 'ell, that's cheered an old man up. Fabulous sight and sound, a 'mighty machine' doing it's stuff (both engines).

Yeah, not exactly 'Euro 6' is it...?! :D

That noise just takes me back to my spotting days, when you knew a Deltic was coming because you heard it first - particularly if it was lifting an express out of Peterborough and the wind was in the right direction!

Aye. Heard them a long while before they came into view. Used to lay awake with my window open in the summer listening to them heading north on the overnight trains. Could hear them for ages if the conditions were right.

Same here. The house I grew up in was about half a mile as the crow flies from the ECML. On a clear winter's night you could hear them for ages, like you could hear 25s, 31s and 40s pulling goods trains, sometimes labouring with their load. Mournful hoots on the horns.

Oh, to return to those simpler, happier days now... :(

Bringing back some memories here fella's, as mentioned above, you could hear a deltic from quite a way away, depending upon traffic, time of day etc...

From my spot at Ouston Junction, in its heyday (late 70's early 80's), the proliferation of traffic ECML, Freight, and trip work to Consett Steel works, made it extremely busy.

The big memory though is a deltic, northbound, coming to the crossing to the slow, at a 80mph speed limit, passing over it, then opening up the taps, to full throttle.

Another Deltic tour that ignores us darn sarf. To join that tour will mean two nights accomodation in Birmingham for the likes of me. Not cheap.

  14. AAAARRRGGHHHH!!!!

I was in a hotel in Kings Cross on Saturday night, reading a book, blissfully unaware that about two minute's walk away a Deltic was under the station roof... something which I could have witnessed for the first time since 2nd January 1982.

    Damn, damn, damn, damn, DAMN!!

And what about us who live furver norf? You do know it takes just as long to drive from the north of Scotland to Edinburgh as it does to drive from Birmingham or Peterborough to Edinburgh?

I hate when this happens. Around this time last year, I was quietly at home on a Saturday night when, had I been paying more attention, I could have been sat on the beer terrace of my favourite pub watching 60163 cross a spectacular viaduct.

The Deltic (9009) is out of action and has been pulled from Pathfinders 'Waverley' job on January 5th. It needs a bogie (s) change and according to the DPS web site there isn't time to sort the job out. They HOPE to have it in action for the re-scheduled 'Auld Reekie' job.
Aye, well I'm not booking until Tornado AND Alycidon are both fit and well on the main line

    :(:(

The DPS have 2 fully overhauled bogies nearly ready for 15, mainline certified as well, wonder if they use one of them in the short term???
