46464 went straight from service to preservation but has now been made to look like it went to a scrapyard :(

What an odd way to describe it's rescue from the plinth. You've clinically removed the GSRPS from it's history, not to mention it being based in Mallow (and my very closely missing being involved there, they folded almost immediately I joined and I didn't even get to pay the membership fee!)

45305 was preserved by Albert Draper from his own scrapyard, not BR.

withoiut counting, I'd guess there are more locos that didn't come via Barry than ones that did, even the GWR didn't do bad.

1363,1369,1420,1442,1450,1466,1501,1638,2516,2818,3205,3717,4003, 4073,4079,4555,5775,5786,6000,6106,6412,6430,6435,6697,6998,7029,7715,7752,7760,7808,9019,9400 (I'm sure there are probably more)

Hands up on the GSRPS involvement at Dundalk (quite honestly, I'd clean forgotten about the organisation), though AIUI the planned redevelopment of the station at that time was a key factor and it's sojourn in Mallow (latterly at least, not in one piece) certainly didn't qualify as it's happiest period.

By way of amends, I offer bit about the GSRPS, though with a slight caution. It's not going to be the happiest thing you'll read today:
    https://www.boards.ie/b/thread/2055971480

..... but this might just well be! Things are definitely looking up for No.131 now. (from RM website only yesterday):

And spookily enough, I've just received notification that 131 will be doing her first running in turns this Sunday 5th November. She'll do 2 return trips Whitehead Excursion - Carrickfergus and after lunch she'll do a return trip to Belfast Central.

Does all show that, in the realms of direct from BR preservation purchases, passenger locomotives fared considerably better than freight ones.

So the 733 BR 2-8-0 WD's stood little chance.

Still a surprise that not one found its way to Barry though.

It would somehow be good sport to take a WD 2-10-0 or 9F and make it threecylinder with a Krauss-Helmholtz up front and compare it with Tornado,Prince of Wales etc going over some hill.

Strewth, they're not hanging about over there! It'll be interesting to hear feedback on performance, fuel and water consumption compared with the more powerful S & V classes (pity there's no VS any more!). Wish I could be there.... I'm told the bacon rolls are legendary!

How many locos went to Barry from the sheds that the WDs were withdrawn from, though? Surely it’s not how many there were, but where they were that should drive a view of over or under representation?

Looks like you have a good point. From a swift internet search it appears the majority were withdrawn from the North of England, far outside of Mr Woodham's typical purchasing area.

I understood Western region had an allocation, but either this was small, or they had mostly been transferred away come withdrawal.

For the Black 5's, you can add 44806, 44932, 45025, 45407 and 45428, all of which came straight from BR.. Others include 41708, 46441, 46443, 46464, 51218 an 52044. No sure about 52322. Did that go to a scrapyard first?

So even without the 'Barry Miracle', Black 5s would have been very well represented in preservation.
