How do the MHR organise the more casual type of volunteer? I'm searching for ways to contribute to Preservation and as an ex member MHR might be an option.

Big step for me as my past experiences are grim but it seems that some of the ghosts may have been exorcized now.

It would be only a few days a year though rather than the every weekend it used to be.

I live a similar distance as you from the MHR but these days I find that by the time I reach Guildford I need forty winks, I usually pull into a café car park on the Hogs back.

Might be an idea to go to the volunteer open day and see if there is any opportunity for ride-sharing to get to and from the line?

I think you're forgetting that RG lives in Ireland - not exactly an easy or cheap trip to go to the volunteer open day.

Was thinking more in general as there seemed to be more than one person interested.

That's part of the problem of course! I'm trying to work out if it would be feasible to volunteer on an ad hoc basis nowadays. I've a feeling H&S and training would get in the way nowadays

Two hours each way is too much if you're going to put in a day's, possibly hard, work in as well

Depends what you want to do and where.

We have other shed volunteers from the USA, France and Germany who come over for a few days or a week. There is not particular H&S issue and plenty of jobs that dont require training. Where training is required it can be arranged.

tbh MHR is my second option, as a Swanage member I'm looking into that too.

If you are a shareholder in Southern Locomotives, they have a shareholders day were new shareholders get to drive one of their locos on the Swanage. A possibility?

The NYMR have volunteers that regularly come over from Holland, including footplate crew. Popping over from the Emerald Isle can't be too much different.

Oh dear, I hadn't connected it with this thread. As someone restoring a GWR coach, I can totally imagine how you must feel about it. How did the Mark 1 come to be out of control and running down the hill in the first place, what caused that ?

I've expressed an interest in volunteering when at the MHR to a number of front line staff. The response on every occasion made me feel I was talking a foreign language.
