Have received a report that following attention to the air braking system that could not be done at Cranmore, 41313 successfully took a test train over the IoWSR line on 30th October.

Yes it did. I saw it.

Apparently all was well and it has now been stowed away for the winter.

A great example of cooperation between railways, and a rather lovely locomotive if I may say so. Great job everyone.

they are lovely little engines and not much bigger than an O2 and fit in quite well. I'll have to take the ferry!

Yes, blood expensive isnt it, its to keep the islanders from escaping :)
surely you can get it cheaper, can't you fly from dublin ,or belfast to Southampton then train from there?

Have you tried Red Funnel they might just be a little cheaper? The ferries costs are ludicrous there are times when it is cheaper to go from Portsmouth to France than to the Island :-(

one option may be to see if you can get a car load and share the cost, the ferry price is per car isnt it, does it matter how many are in the car?

Ah yes. Transport costs have always been an issue where the I.O.W. is concerned. That is why suggestions of the "W.I.B.N. if so and so locomotive were brought over" kind tend to produce gritted teeth.

Incidentally, although I don't know if there are any savings to be made in bringing a vehicle over if it is booked online in advance, it would be worth examining.

It would be cheaper no doubt for a car than my camper even though it takes up no more space than a large car. If I made the crossing I'd want to see the island too, so being a foot passenger wouldn't work. Even at half that price it would seem dear and that was November. Might be even more in summer.

I believe that a camper van during the summer can be £200-£300, I cannot see for the life of me how they can justify that level of cost. They do not seem to realise that it is a lifeline to the Island, they seem to regard it as a cash cow though.

i can sail over from Ireland for that money.

Don't doubt it. At one time it was possible to sail with car overnight to Cherbourg, including an inside four berth cabin, invariably upgraded to "outside", for less than a day return to the IOW. However, P&O from Portsmouth was obviously dying and duly died.

I don't know if there is the business in the I.O.W. to support a competitive new car ferry service, particularly as the island is not exactly well provided with adequate natural harbours and berthing facilities, as well as boats, would be costly.

I frequently visit the IoW, for where else can you see, and ride in, such splendid pre-grouping coaches? I agree that vehicle prices on the ferry are outrageous, but the bus system on the IoW is so good that I am happy to go over as a foot passenger. Even that isn't exactly cheap, but it is put-uppable with!

My own (all too infrequent) safaris tend to be by Coastway from Hove to Portsmouth & Southsea, via the hydrofoil to Pier Head, thence an "Inter Village 45" to Smallbrook Jnc. and I sincerely hope this will still be possible in a year, two years ....

If the Island Line does go belly up after next May's 'costed review', then I'd have to use the buses. Ho-hum!
