At least a couple of vehicles a year tear down that slip road and demolish a sign or two at the T junction at the end!

I'm convinced that the British attitude to signposting is that it is unnecessary: if you are a local, you don't need it and if you are not, then you shouldn't be there in the first place.

Also on Isle of Man vintage buses , my comment was tongue in cheek to emphasise the many times I've had a good time in the not so up market pubs that seem to be disappearing .

I seem to spend half my life there these days. Sounds a bit energetic for Ditchling nowadays, though; the average age there must be at least 70.

I've been refused entry to a pub when I've just got off my motor bike carrying my helmet , needless to say not on the I.O.M

Brilliant series Robin. May I offer my attempt at the 'now' although given the fascinating original the now is distinctly disappointing ...... watchet overlay (2).jpg Watchet Harbour.jpg

A note of caution if you are thinking of driving on Welsh roads:- In England, where you see a bend sign by the road it usually means there's a curve ahead... Such softies don't rate a second glance in Wales let alone a sign. Here, when you see a sign they really mean it - and if there are chevrons there as well, they really, really mean it (often accompanied by a steep drop or climb just at the tightest part of the bend!):Woot:

Whilst touring Eire on motor bikes back in the 70s the sign that always put a smile on our faces was the command to Yield , instead off Give Way . Of course now many are duplicated with the Irish Gaelic not that I have anything against that except you have twice as much to read .

Try driving something marked "Bog Road" in Ireland. Initial mystification became something approaching sheer terror as the road surface was evidently swaying away in resonant manner under the car! Definitely a case of "Careful now".

When driving across Wales the signs near the border say SLOW - ARAF. As you get furthur into Wales you get ARAF - SLOW. When you go on to Anglesey it just says ARAF

Looks like the remains of a large sign at the foot of Goviers Lane behind the engine shed. Can anyone date the rail or suggest what was on it? Vintage or modern?

I think I read somewhere that hiding or concealing a road sign is an offense, and that includes allowing the sign to be concealed by not cutting back vegetation.

    That is easily cured.
York council solved the problem of overgrowing roadside vegetation blocking its 30 speed limit signs by cutting them at mid height and welding in a new section to make them taller.

Well all I know is there are an awful lot of offenders down my neck of the woods. It's so frustrating when you're teaching people to drive, and you have to keep pointing out to them the places where the vital road signs like speed limit changes are concealed by overgrowth.
There are vague legal issues where the growth comes over from private properties, which for some reason can't be cut, as property rights trump road safety(!)
Couldn't' make it up really, could you?
