More to the point, any thoughts on the 2018 timetable?

    Looks good to me

    Hi, Mike,
If you look at the bottom finger of the fingerpost, you will see the style. For a better view, "drive" to West Chinnock on Google and go to the junction of Higher Street and East Lane. The pyramid and the top two fingers were added since I were a lad, although the original "Merriott" finger was snapped off while I was at the village school.

What is the logic for the check rail please, Hugh?

The curve is no sharper than it has been for the past 144 years.

It doesn't mention on the gold timetable as to why there is an asterisk against the DMU?

Is the curve under 200 metre radius?
If yes then check rail is required.
No matter if it has not been fitted historically it is a requirement.

It will be interesting to see how much extra drag there is round this curve now when heading for MHD.

Pity. How careless. A golden opportunity wasted. :Shifty:

  11. 1) I understand the new check rail at Watchet Bridge is a first for the Minehead Branch.

    2) Yes.

Is it true that it is the tightest curve on the WSR?

  13. It's just over 240m radius (around 12 chains) by my reckoning.

1 - Good to see a 1047 arrival at Minehead - makes a day out at the seaside by train a viable proposition (asterisk permitting)
2 - Standard timings probably sensible
3 - A general slow down of services - the WTTs will show if this means longer stopovers at some stations
4 - Simultaneous departures scheduled for all crossings at Blue Anchor
5 - Saturday has its own 6 train service through the summer with regular diesel hauled double round trip
6 - The Doniford Flyer runs through to Bishops Lydeard
7 - 1715 diesel up service doesn't stop at Stogumber - may be some lobbying on that?

Some interesting changes, shows thought has gone into it.

I think I see the difference.
There's one of that style opposite The Blue Anchor in BA.
It got dark - I had to go home!

Any reason for not stopping at Stogumber?

Oh and can the timetables have station names in full, not codes??

Oh yes, I've seen it now - too many years of reading WTT's in code format before printing. You know it's bad when you make enquiries on Real Time Trains in TIPLOCs or 3 letter station codes. ( TSDB is even better as it accepts TOPS location codes.

If you know a TIPLOC or 3-letter code you can work out the Real Time Trains search URI for a location without going through the search form. Now *that's* bad!

In the summer of 1986 when I worked in the Telephone Enquiry bureau at Waterloo we were provided with the National Passenger Timetable and route map, the National Fares Manual, a pencil and a pad of paper....

West Somerset Railway - Then and Now #137

    Washford 1972 / 2017

Washford has always presented a rather forbidding aspect as viewed from the road. It is on a rather nasty bend with poor visibility, which can make crossing the road difficult at busy times. But the walk to the ruined Cleeve Abbey is well worth it.
