Isn't the present appeal exactly that? (But I agree with the rest of Bill's post.)

They are - Fenchurch is one of two locomotives getting into the overhaul queue.

It is. Hence the rather lukewarm response. That's exactly my point.

If the investigation results in a green light for the overhaul, I'm sure we'll see the appeal proper launched with much bigger fanfare.

I asked the this question about Tallylyn and was told that the wheel centres and reversing wheel were original.

I would need that to be proved - by destructive testing!

Well the old lady is working on that, her coupling rods were original as well until she had an "ooh nasty" moment a few years ago (with apologies to Mr Phillips)

I see the latest Heritage Railway Magazine has a much more positive slant on the T3 appeal.

Merry Christmas to all and thank you for your kind support of the initial Crowdfunder for LSWR T3 No.563.

The crowdfunder closes on December 23rd at 17.09 so if you can, please log on to the Crowdfunder page and donate! We have been bowled over by the initial 2 months of fundraising and would like to encourage all to give No.563 a little Christmas present.

the exterior looks to be in fair condition, but as I understand it the inner box is life expired i'm assuming things like the tube plate will be ok, so is it cutting out the weak plate and replacing things like half side plates and throat plate?

Many of us await the assessment with interest. There's so much by way of boiler work which was considered impossible not so very long ago. Here's to hoping 563 turns out to be in better nick than the Ffesterbahn's "Welsh Pony"!

Oh yes for sure, Some engines had so much of their copper inner boxes renewed that they were virtually new fireboxes, today, its more a case of the money being available, than a lack of the skills to rebuild boilers, some smaller engines have ran for a long time with steel boxes fitted where there once were copper, once the staying was sorted out.

Watched the last 30 minutes of 'Oh, Mr Porter' on Talking Pictures TV this morning, in the final race to get the gunrunners to the police the train goes through a loop (twice!) that appears to have a T3 parked on an the adjacent track.

I never realised the old firebox had been patched to keep it going, this I would think was a war time measure, Assuming the decision is made to fit a whole new inner firebox, whats the price differential between a whole new steel box, and a copper one if some parts of the old one can be salvaged , but I would think the SW would like to retain the old one as an exhibit, there cant be that many war time era repaired boxes to show just how worn out engines were kept going.
