Can you really tell? I've not been able to, please don't think I'm being sarky or anything like that I just really can't tell!

    I sort of agree ...
I saw the Wolf only once , on a down express ex Marylebone . it was at Northwick Park around 1958. my uncle and I had gone for a few hours spotting .
it was , I think , painted black , tho that may have just been the angle of the sun , ,but running by on the embankment it had a dark brooding presence I have never seen in any other loco. simply unforgettable.
the same uncle took great pleasure in telling me of his trip on the Coronation Scot.

That'll be dirty then - in 1958 it would have been the BR dark green with totems on the tender! 60506 was the only one to retain the stovepipe chimney throughout its life - which I have always preferred on the LNER Pacifics to the rimmed variant fitted.

The Clan is I think the most graceful looking of the Standards, and would look even more so with a double chimney...

If it's 'standards', I've always been taken by the Class 3 76xxx 2-6-0's.

If we're going earlier, I'm also very partial to the very well proportioned GNRI 4-4-0's, so just to be awkward, I'll nominate the extinct U Class. Originally designed by Glover and delivered in 1915, a second batch of 5 was, somewhat surprisingly, ordered under the McIntosh regime. The later batch contained a few detail differences, though only addition of cab side windows and the more modern tender were immediately obvious. These were last inside cylindered locos built in Europe, if not the entire world .... and yes, they did carry the striking GNRI blue livery (introduced in 1936). The '48 batch received names of Irish counties, with the originals gaining names (of Loughs) at the same time

The 0-6-0 freight version (Class UG) designed by Glover didn't appear until 1937 (after his retirement) with a second (again slightly modified) batch appearing in 1948. These, unsurprisingly, wore the black livery.

Both these designs really were excellent performers as well as being good looking. Here's a 1948 built U class No.204 "Antrim" at Omagh Station, on the regrettably equally extinct 'Derry Road' (from Wikipedia):

Isn't that a bit like saying "Geri was the best looking Spice Girl". It might be true, but it's hardly saying much ... ;)

Nice! Must say since I've moved to East Anglia I've taken a bit more of an interest into loco's of the LNER and it's constituents, I still need to try and have a ride behind the Y14, I love 8572, but I'd be happy to see this in action up Kelling Bank. image.jpg Not my photo, and there's a few more here https://transportsofdelight.smugmug...STERN-REGION/TYPE-E-240-LOCOMOTIVES/i-SQ4rk5Z

I have always thouht that the Manson locos of the Great North of Scotland Railway are very pleasing to the eye. This is one of his O class, later designated D42 by the LNER.

Not really sure why but one of my favourites is the Hawksworth ‘Counties’.
Perhaps it was that straight nameplate that was the attraction.
The one named after the County I was born in:

Stop Right Now. As a teenager the now Mrs Horner interrupted my Hormonal teenage thoughts quite a few times, in between day dreams of 46229, 46203 60532 and 37401/408, Geri was always my favourite 'lady in red'

Since this seems to be open to the British Commonwealth, I'll throw in two dreary colonial engines with headlights...

1st entrant is the 38 Class, represented here by 3813. It was on display at Sydney Terminal Station, during September 1955 as part of NSWGR's Centenary Celebrations. 3813 was set up with the drivers just clear of the rails, they and the staff exchanger were powered by a electric motor at teh push of a button.

2nd entrant is the 12 Class, with 1243 doing the honours.

Both pictures are official NSWGR pictures.
