5043 -The Christmas White Rose - 9/12/17

Can't see a separate thread but can report today's White Rose with 5043 is currently at Nuneaton. Not counted carriages yet, assume its 9 plus Reg? Steam heating doing its job.

Solid 46mph up to Arley Tunnel, min 44. Looking fwd to the vids of snowy landscape in the sunshine.

 

It's load 10 plus Reg.

LEI - EMD 26m 14s. 57 before Syston then 61 max down slow after Sileby.

EMD - ILK tedious 37m 32s. Banter with pax on the 2x67 hauled Pathfinder tour to Lincoln at Trent Jn. Took high level goods line then crawl through Toton and sig stop Trowell. Mayor waiting to greet us at Ilkeston.

ILK - C'field crew stop 24m 01s. Max 57 then steady 55 up to Alfreton Tnl, 64 max after.

C'field - Pontefract 43m 57s. 67 max before Beighton Jn. Sig stop Masboro for TPE 185. 71 after Swinton fell to 58 around post 14 1/2. 68 max then 55 min on climb after Moorthorpe, 65 max down to Pontefract water stop. Clouded over.

 

Forgot to say GW 5619 was at the headshunt at Ironville Jn as we passed.

Prolonged water stop at Pontefract, away 18 late. To York in 37m 11s incl unexplained sig stop Church Fenton when nothing passed. Max 68 after Colton Jn.

RTT showing ECML on the return to Donny, but rumours we may go via Knottingley?

 

Bowled by a Freightliner at Whitacre Junction, some great clag though.

Apart from the climbs to Daw Hill and towards Hinckley, this is route is a non event for the timing/performance brigade Imo. Regardless, I'm booked on it for the 3rd time in four years and always have a great time in York. Hopefully we get the run along the ECML to Donny for some much needed 75mph running.

 

I know it can be a bit risky to draw inferences from RTT, but it looks like you got your wish for a decent gallop along the ECML - at least as far as Shaftholme Junction. 28 miles in something around 29 minutes start to pass?? Maybe Sean Emmett can enlighten us in due course. So definitely not a total non-event performance and timing-wise. And I must say I still valued the informative snippets that we got from Sean for the northbound run - if only for the fact that it has provided a record of an appearance of an ex-GW locomotive on the Big Railway - a rather more infrequent event lately, it would seem.

 

I had us running in low 70s for a good period so was happy with that. Hopefully Sean will provide a better insight.

 

So away from York a few mins late and a steady acceleration to 53 mph by Colton Jn. Eventually reached 73 around Balne. Sig stop outside Donny.
49m 23s to stop in P4.

Steady 25 on climb to Hexthorpe Jn.

Away from Thrybergh Jn water stop 6 mins early, now at sigs before Roundwood Chord Jn.

More subdued on the return. Held after water stop for late TPE put us 10 late. 50 st Treeton fell to 43 Barrow Hill. Skipped crew stop CHD saved few mins.

Low 40s on climb to mp 140 1/2, max 62 down to Ilkeston.

 

It always seems to be TPE...

 

My sad mind... thought you were talking about a horse on the end instead of a diesel...

Agree though it was great footage made better by the horses.
