    Cashmores yard, sadly.

If we are talking US locos; E7A &B, likewise E8/9. Any of the earlier SD series.

I agree....as a kid I loved them in their original livery. Saw most of the Crewe built ones brand new on test through Lancaster and Holbeck used to run their new ones in on stopping trains to Morecambe :)

My favourite of the British diesels are (actually) the new class 68:)

Outside UK, my favourite is the legedary "Nohab" diesel locomotive. Beautiful look and a fantastic sound of GM EMD 567 !;)

    regards

I loved the early Danish mainline diesels (late 1920's), with bodywork finished to match them to contemporary carriage stock. Can't find an online photo unfortunately. Anyone?

Livery wise, you can't beat the Santa Fe "warbonnet", which is absolutely stunning:

Perhaps it might suit a Deltic (better than that purple at any rate!) or a snowplough fitted Class 37! :D

Yes ,the "Santa Fe" has a really great livery! I remember i saw these engines from the Märklin catalogue. :) And these locomotives are extremely robust and tenacious of life, some still active today over 60 years old!

One of the "Nohab" locomotive has also get the "Santa Fe" livery: http://iho.hu/img/120207_nohab/020.jpg

    kind regards

They look very close to the Victorian Railways 'B' class locos, which I developed a soft spot for when I was out in Melbourne many years ago; used to watch them hauling freights on the elevated section of the line between Flinders Street and Southern Cross :)

Your opinion of the Peaks dissuades me from voting in your poll; anyone who (a) can't note the difference in performance between a Class 44 / 45 / 46 (b) doesn't give any credit to the Class 47 (poor because of its equivalent engine rating to Classes 45 / 46 but extremely efficient given its relatively standardised driving knowledge known to most drivers) and (c) fails to take account of their performance record on the MML does not deserve to be credited as an independent pollster.

    I suggest you re-assess your options !

Rather easy Fred, and I can't put anymore simply than this, I really don't like 47's! Whilst I'll agree the taxpayer and operators of the Brush Type 4 have got their money's worth from them. As someone who likes to sample different types of traction, (Steam or Diesel) Class 47's do absolutely nothing for me! I find them dull, boring, and they sound like my washing machine on full spin!

Sorry to hear that but looking at your option list it appears you like the grunt and whistle of individual English Electric-engined classes at the expense of the more subtle Swiss competitor. Having commuted on the MML for 18 months behind a variety of Classes 44 thru 47 I feel you have lost out on a range of performance experiences that were second to none ! After all how many times has your 31 / 37 / 40 / 42 / 52 attained 100 mph on a regular basis; I grant you that I have had a Cricklewood Class 31 confirmed at 98 mph but my daily commute home (behind a Sulzer Type 4) regularly maintained time - and that only by exiting Ampthill Tunnel at speeds in excess of 100 mph ! I have even driven (unofficially) a Class 45 on this service and attained 105 mph; a performance more superior to that of my cab ride in a Deltic travelling at 115 mph on a Kings Cross - Peterborough service.

Still it's too late for regrets as MUs have replaced LHs and all that is left is memories and preservation !
