Martin, Really!!!. If your platforms can only accommodate five vehicles (true of several places) then five vehicles are your maximum load. Coach parties are normally (agreed not inevitably) pre-booked anyway. Stop digging!

Or even a "P" with just the "Obo" - standard for gloomy out of season weekend workings (1969) 323HK1969.enhance.jpg

Or mentioning 75027 - a Boxing Day special in 1971 when even what passed for "Big Chufferitis" on the Bluebell at the time wasn't up to the job - She slipped to a stand on Freshfield bank with a 7 coach train (including both directors saloons), had to set back to SP and a hastily steamed "Bluebell" was called on to assist

Dare I ask what happens if it's not possible to extend platforms due to bridges or topography?

Or what about, say, a line that has pre-preservation stations with platform lengths varying from 1 coach to 10 coaches? Should they extend their smaller stations and lose their authenticity, or should they just run 1-coach trains?

(No prizes for working out what line fits my criteria, sorry!)

It imposes an upper limit on train size.

I don't know why I'm asking this, but what about really short stations on lines that clearly need more than 2 coaches per run?

A good reason for not running 10 coach trains!

Grandfather rights. RSP 5 Guidance for minor railways states: "Platforms should be long enough to accommodate the longest train booked to call at the station plus an allowance for inaccurate stopping, typically 2 m. Exceptionally, a shorter platform may be accepted provided that it is long enough to accommodate the majority of trains and special arrangements are agreed with HMRI for longer trains."
True of any platforms built in the last thirty years, or so.

Oh absolutely, I get that, but assuming we're discussing heritage railways then grandfather rights apply to all.

I suspect I'm on Paul's ignore list - am I bovvered? - but what does the NYMR do, lengthen Goathland platforms or stick to four coach trains?

Not sure of Std gauge stations that fit this criteria, but the Festiniog certainly has stations where the regular train length well and truly exceeds the platform (Penrhyn for instance).

In the s.g. world, Damems on the KWVR and Kelling Halt on the NNR would fit that criteria, as does the aforementioned Goathland on the NYMR. I'm sure there are others.
