Are either of the Fairburn 2-6-4Ts on hire to the LHR?

I'm fairly sure they're either owned by the LHR or by a person very high up in authority there. Although I wouldn't be adverse to a Fairburn tank moving to be available, especially for spot hire, somewhere other than the Lake District. I have very fond memories of it from when it made a brief visit to Loughborough however many years ago that was...

I'm clutching at straws, hoping it isn't 80136!

As a long shot, aren't Austerities class 4s? And isn't there one for sale at Llangollen? It's quite fun trying to work out what it might be!

Here we go, froth, froth and a bit more froth! Let's have a few quid on say 7760? (If it's still up for sale), consider how useful a BR 4mt tank is I'd be suprised if a big player let one go, (didn't Mr H make a play for 80079 a few years ago? And was rebuffed) its like unwrapping Christmas presents, let's just wait and see. Although in a lovely daydream, 61994 gets whisked south, and another overhaul!

Several of the std tanks are owned either by individuals or non affliliated private groups/companies. These perhaps have a price though I agree the railway owned ones are most unlikely to change hands.
7760 is out of ticket so not fitting the reported criteria?

    Maybe he’s bought half of a class 8, i.e. 48518’s wheels. #thisisgettingabitsilly

80136 is owned by the Class 4 preservation group/trust along with an austerity that is in a siding at Llangollen. But it's final work to see it through to completion was done by the NYMR. The group did run out of money to overhaul the loco and the austerity doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Could it be that?

Agreed, 80078 for example. Swanage railway would never had let it go if they had the choice. However it was owned by SLL who needed some quick cash for the next Bulleid overhaul.

My hope is that he's bought 80080 and is bringing it to Swanage. We'll have to wait and see though!

The article referred to a loco which was on hire to a railway which has been running it - not one owned by a railway.

Some of those groups have become a very small group, due to the deaths of individuals - and the remaining members are 40 years older than when they bought the loco.

    Stephen,

I excluded 80080 as its currently in pieces in the PRCLT shed at Butterly and there doesn't meet the currently running criteria.

You're right about 76017 though, my mistake! Guess that takes her off the list of potentials then!

Does tend to suggest that its not an engine that has been running on the mainline in preservation (as Tom's suggested) as there's not many options left, but instead is one that is "ex mainline"? That certainly opens up a lot more possibilities! Maybe he has indeed managed to talk round the owner of one of the Class 4 tanks (80072 or 80136)

80072 is owned by a Trust, not an individual.

Pretty sure both Fairburns are not in common ownership, however you are right to say that their ownerships are very closely related to the line.
