There's one already claimed for the NRM, 66799 Evening Star, although as GBRf's MD has said they'll have to wait another 30 odd years before they can claim it.

You'll know you're old when they preserve one. :Pompus:

I think you've hit the nail on the head there... So much "66 hate" out there but the figures speak for themselves in terms of simply the number of tons these things have reliably shifted over the last 20 years.

I think that if the class 66 had a sound like this in service, they might be a more popular amongst diesel-enthusiasts! ;)

Still sounds like a 'shed'! Not doing anything for me! Have you heard a 68 @240P15? They sound like a cross between a Hydralic and and a Deltic, much more fun!

I`m absulutely agree with you! I`m not a big fan of the class 66. The new class 68 is actually my favorite amongst the UK diesels!:) I think it has a smart looking design and a very great sound to be a modern diesel!

    regards

I'm guessing quite a few will end up in preservation (on heritage lines, not just Evening Star) as there's loads of them, so they will probably end up being reasonably cheap as companies start to get rid of them, they're reliable and, much as many people may not like them, distinctive.

They're a feature of the current railway era, so presumably we'll want to be able to re-create some aspect of that in the future. Which will also presumably mean someone will have to make an effort to preserve ballast hoppers, recycling wagons and container wagons for the Class 66 photo charters in 2060.

How about preserving a pair of 66's and a Rail Head Treatment train? I think the 66's look really impressive in Autumn Grime. ;)

Aw c'mon Matt, sounds as sweet as a nut does that. 68's have Caterpillar engines and yes they are good machines. I did a Retro Railtour day out to Edinburgh recently with a pair of new 68's T&T and an excellent job they did, ran to the minute all day.
But I do like a nice 2 stroke diesel engine (or 2 ;))

I suspect that, like Pacers, one or two will end up on heritage lines. I have no strong views on them one way or the other personally, they seem reliable heavy haulers which do the job

Someone will complain that they are far too big for the loads they have to haul and the lines that have them would have been better off preserving non-existent class 20s instead.

I'd imagine they will be telling us an 03 is fine for most lines ;)

Ha! Well, there is one named after the railway, and you could probably argue that in historical terms, they were much more typical of the line than a Dukedog ;)

Didn’t they work the waste trains from imberhorne? If so, then they have played a significant role in the history of the line and could go on the wish list with a K class and Craven 2-4-0!

With significant growth in 2017 and more on the horizon in 2018 and beyond, we have acquired 10 Class 66’s from DB Cargo. Amazing to reflect on the journey this business has been on over the past few years with almost 100 of these locos in our fleet and over 700 staff in our business now...

    Cheers, Neil
