With our resident locos up together, contract jobs give us projects which we all find interesting, gives us opportunities to increase our experience, build our skill set and develop a strong team. At the end of the project we normally run the engine in or use it for a short period meaning that our crews and visitors get the chance to experience something new. And as you say, it is a direct way of turning our volunteer labour into funds for the railway which it needs in order to develop and grow.

I can honestly say that the attitude of all our staff is very positive about these projects.

Today the wheelsets were loaded onto transport to take them to the South Devon Railway Engineering company.

Excuse my ignorance on this, but curious. Doesn’t it cost more to bring the locomotive to you by rail for the wheelsets to go back down the road where they have come from (20 miles or so difference).
How easy/or not would it be for them to come off at churston & reunited later.

I’m sure this is factored in when you take the job on. Enjoying the updates 5239 the first engine I remember from my holidays in Devon when younger so taking interest in the overhaul.

    Thanks

The complete locomotive was delivered to ESR, Cranmore by road mid October. Since then we have done all the preparatory work and lifted the boiler from the frames and the frames from the wheels. It is being overhauled at Cranmore as a contract task for the Dartmouth Steam Railway. If the wheelsets were removed at Churston it would have been a very difficult task to transport the rest to Cranmore. Also we need them to take measurements to refurbish and refit the axleboxes, coupling rods and connecting rods. A photographic log can be found by following the link below:

The mostly stripped frames of 5239 in the workshop at Cranmore. A start has also been made on the removal of tubes as this photo of the boiler shows. Both pictures taken yesterday.[IMG][IMG]

is there a reason behind putting the number on the wrong side of the bufferbeam?

Oh wait, that's the rear end I guess...

That seems a tad tight space to be undertaking an overhaul in!

The frames and boiler will swap places soon. As you say, you can’t do much on the frames with that wall there but boiler work in that position is fine. The frames are that end ready for steam cleaning and shot blasting outside.

More progress on 5239, a start has been made on the shotblasting of the frames. The rear bufferbeam and the dragbox have been completed so far and painted in primer. First picture shows the bufferbeam after being shot and the 2nd and 3rd show the painted sections.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Please note the link provided earlier for photos no longer works due to a new ESR website. The new website can be found here https://eastsomersetrailway.com/

Does this mean that the very nice archive of photographs of many ESR locos, etc., has been lost?

The gallery is being "reorganised", I'm not sure which photos will remain publicly available and which will no longer be.
