You could well be right. Nevertheless, DBC policy on rear end assistance is somewhat different to that of WCRC if I remember correctly how Wayne has explained it.

I know it is and I only suggested that as I did see it happen once a few years ago when N0 9 stalled at Shere Crossing and the diesel fired up but only after a bit of a wait so I assume they needed permission from someone to do it.

If the diesel was dead then there probable would not have been anyone in it, so crew member from support coach would need to get to it first. As you said agreement/permission to do this takes time.

46253 that is a stunning shot of OC arriving at Padd, very lucky that there was nothing in Platform 2 and that it did not go into the gloom of P11 as pathed on RTT. I am guessing the early arrival may have been a benefit.

There was a crew member in it and they always run on tickover. I think Wayne said a 67 has a fast idle rate so it sounds as if it's doing work. On the occassion I mentioned there was an exchange of whistles and they set off again.

I think I am totally confused. So if DBC have a diesel on the back is it their purely in case the train stalls? If not why is it there if there is a generator car?

You need to find the 34052 Footex thread. Wayne gave a detailed explanation about 67s on the back and the procedure that has to be gone through before rear end assistance can be given.

Very challenging day for photography on Tuesday... here are my two efforts from Mortimer and Worting Junction.

Thanks Spamcam 81 for finding the link and Wayne for the original description of the DBC rules.
My only experience of a Class 67 involved in a steam tour was the Devonian on May 4 2008 where we took the 67 behind Duke of Gloucester due to what I seem to remember was a brake issue of some sort discovered at Bristol whilst attaching DoG.
As it was explained to us at the time (which may of course be wrong) the steam crew had agreed that if they needed the diesel they would whistle to get some assistance. When they did the 67 apparently decided it needed a computer reboot or some such, and shut down.

Starts about 1 min 15 in and you can hear the whistle for assistance, but did not go well after that.

I was on that train too and my recollection is the same. I think that the Duke would have made it but we skidded to a halt where the the flange lubricator is situated. Wayne's explanation that you can't change to 'push mode' unless stationary may explain why we had to 'stop and proceed'.
