You have a time machine and you can go back to the 50s/60s and save one Engine. Which would it be ?

As 240P15 has already made what for me would be the obvious choice I would have to go for Chapelon's other great experiment 160A1.
Maybe the French will consider the new build option one day in order to fill the gaping chasm that exists in their somewhat peculiar selection of locomotives that were deemed worthy of saving.

Agree what a stunning looking locomotive....Lasted until 1949 apparently which is close enough that one might have been kicking around a scrap line until 1950 right?

Sounds fine to me. I'm sure we can allow a little leeway for such a beautiful machine. We'd obviously have to enforce the rules more strictly if it looked like a Q1...

Agree with you sir! I would certainly also recreate the class 240P, the world`s most efficient compound locomotives!:)
The scrapping of Andre Chapelon`s masterpieces are, in my (and many others view) the biggest mistake in preservation history!

I'd have thought Big Bertha would be quite practical on the preserved railways................

    I'd save number 6256, Sir William A. Stanier F.R.S.

One of the LMS/Ivatt diesel twins 10000 or 10001.

A raging gap in the national collection in my opinion.

( I know there is a proposal to rebuild etc but even so..........)

Can I do December 1949 and save 3599 - the last GWR metro tank?

Can I also take an angle grinder with me? That way I can leave some of the side tanks and half of the cab roof behind....

At last - can't believe I had to scroll 3 pages before getting to 46256! And if we could extend this to one steam and one diesel and then stretch that ever so slighty - the Ivatt twins - 10000 and 10001. :)
