my apologies for resuscitating an old thread , but I have seen the 50,000 lb per hour steam rate quoted elsewhere , but never seen any detail as to when /how/why ...if indeed it did happen .
does anyone have any info please.

and why is there so little enthusiasm for oil firing ?.I would have thought 71000 and 46233 , would be ideal candidates , given the changes that have been made to these locos since preservation . maybe an A4 as well -there are a few knocking around after all

Its an important point though: I don't think I'd care for an extended rail tour hauled by an oil fired steam engine.

Has pulverized fuel a la DDR ever been considered for mainline herritage locomotives in UK?
It will make transition to imported wood pellets easier if that becomes mandatory.

Anybody got at update at all on 71000? I haven't kept up to date with the duke's new owning groups website.

I remember them saying that certain elements of it were being re-engineered. The caprotti valve gear IIRC had given them a few issues.

Gorgeous loco the duke & from having seen it from ground level looks massive for a 4-6-2.

Interesting question. I'm not sure enough is yet known about the characteristics of biomass pellets for any meaningful answer to be given.

**Warning** A shameless plug for one of my own favourite hobby horses now follows ..... There was an update from the Coalition for Sustainable Rail recently. Hope it may be of interest:

    Thank You for CSRail link.
Very nice playing trains with green smell.
We were adviced to bake bread when showing our houses to potential buyers.
All were sold (and bread consumed)so it must have been good advice.
Sibirian Larch is very good for building houses as it has some flame retarding substance as part of genetical set up.
It burned badly in stove but smelled wonderfull of X-Mas.
It will become job of heritage railroading fuelmasters to select a nice smelling fuel mixture and guard the recipe like Coca-Cola,Veuve Cliquot etc.
The DDR burning lignite powder in steam locomotives was very efficient and smelled better than heavy fuel oil.
The majority of preserved UK locomotives have long narrow fireboxes and here coal, lignite, wood -powder burning is possible.

You could always follow the Grand Canyon RR's example and burn used chip fat - probably do wonders for the food sales! Only trouble is would people notice if it came from a 'chippy' or kebab shop?

Follow us on Facebook, loads of updates and news as things happen.

    https://m.facebook.com/dukeofgloucester/

You are correct about the gearing being changed, we are going back to the original (post restoration setup) cam settings.

Just after Christmas 71000 will be back on his wheels again, this time next year we will be very close to Steaming again.

Lots going on, but as I said at the start, check Facebook.

PS, no point talking about oil firing......that isn’t going to happen!

I hope this isn't the only source being used as many people either don't have access to Facebook or won't sign up to Facebook on principle due to security concerns. As a keen enthusiast looking to support heritage ventures my unwillingness to use Facebook - or other social media - such limitations means that some societies won't come into my radar hence lose funding opportunities from supporters with similar willingness but not connected to social media. Or is it the (modern) view that those with no access to social media have nowt to offer hence don't matter ?

Membership costs money that I prefer to donate directly to the project hence my support for those projects which publicise themselves in magazines and websites such as this.

Yikes, I was only giving you the option! As mentioned above, the website is also a good source of information, and you are more than welcome to donate to the cause via the website if you so wish, although ongoing membership is also an option if you wish to support on a monthly basis. Facebook is valuable at getting news out quickly, and by the amount of people that view the page is very successful way of communicating with those that are interested.

    Many thanks for your support.

The video says "in later years we have made improved exhaust cams to further improve coal consumption, based on work by Tom (Daniels, ex-British Caprotti) and correspondence with ... André Chapelon just before he died in 1978".

    And yet now
What is the rationale for changing and then changing back?

The last change didn’t work out, the initial change during the first re build he could run at 70mph at 5% cutoff, following the latest changes you would need to maintain 15% cutoff and couldn’t go any further. This is the great thing about the Duke, still developing him!

Had any measurements been taken to show the differences in power/efficiency with the two settings or are you just judging the performance on a notional cutoff figure (I.e. the 5% or the 15%)?
