I wonder if 30120 ran light over the LMR (or which route it took from Liss to Bordon over the BR network)?

Thanks for that link, a nicely informative piece on the repairs. It's good to see that they seem to be using a more comprehensive repair than attempted previously, gives me hope that 30120 isn't just being patched up to the end of ticket and she may get another overhaul.

When can we expect further news on 30120?

The last official announcement stated that it was to stay at Swanage until the end of December. Given that’s only two days away, I assume there is an announcement imminent regarding its long term home?

    Lovely picture, thanks for posting.
Unfortunately, I think it's at Vauxhall, it was another 8 years before the 3rd rails got to Eastleigh.

    Cheers, Neil

Not always the most reliable source, but that does confirm what the rumours have been suggesting.

Great news for Swanage if true.

Baring any hiccups I believe this is the intention. 30120 will be a welcome addition to the fleet and will hopefully se regular use.

Funny you should say that as I do recall photographing 30120 around Vauxhall, the loco LE to Waterloo to work a special. Eastleigh is written on the negative envelope for some reason, but I don't recall photographing it there, though. Have I got the date correct?

Steam Railway quotes an NRM spokesman regarding the new loan agrrement " This will last from 1/12/2017 until 30/9/20 when the locomotive will be due for overhaul".

    Brilliant news.

And hopefully it might get renewed in 2020. I guess the loco will be accessed then to determine if the Swanage railway are happy to overhaul it, and if the NRM are happy for it to be overhauled before any new agreement is signed.

I think you can be fairly certain that it ran tender first back to Guildford and then round to Bentley before dropping down to Bordon where it would be facing the right way to take the train back.

Update edit. Negatives got mixed up. The photo of 30120 was taken at Vauxhall on October 4th, 1958, but I did take another of it on Eastleigh shed on September 29th, 1958.

Well done for sorting it out. Apart from 6 Bells Jn I would not have been able to help, I was 2 at the time so didn't really take any notice of trains!

    Cheers, Neil

Great to see 30120 back in action on the 28th December - credit to the Swanage Railway for fixing it. As great as it is to hear that the loan has been extended for the rest of the T9's ticket, is the Swanage railway not looking a bit fat with operational locos during the next couple of years? Currently there is 30120 and 80104, with 34053 now returned and 34072 overhauled ready for the 2018 season. 31806 still has a year or two left IIRC(?) and 31874 is due to be finished quite soon? So potentially a fleet of 6 from late 2018 going into 2019? On balance, that's a very desirable situation for the railway to find itself in after being short of servicable locos for a time in 2017!

    And for the future there's 31625, the T3, 30053, 34070 and 34028....

There is also potentially 34010 to come at some stage.

Yes looking quite healthy now, after the shortages of last year. I think Swanage have said in the past they need 5 operational locos at a time.

I believe SLL are aiming to have all 5 of their Bulleids operational at the same time in a few years. I can’t see them all staying at Swanage, they simply won’t be needed. Especially when the railway has so many smaller locos to call upon. The Swanage railway has made it clear in the past that it thinks Bulleids are too big, and they prefer smaller locos.

If that is the case, it's odd that the Swanage have accepted both 34072 and 34053 onto the line with the possibility of 34028 next year.

Maybe a case of needs must? Where would they be this coming year without Bulleids? 30120, 80104, 31806 (as per @Mighty Mogul) to meet an operational requirement for 5 locos (as per @stephenvane) above. So regardless of what might be seen as ideal in cost terms, if they want to run a service, they need at least two more locos - presumably seen to be 34072 and 34053. As so often, the best loco to run a service is "the one that's available".
