Huddersfield station never quite recovered from the day B & O rocked it when, from a standing start at Hillhouse box on a FootEx special, charged through with everything it had. The station cat set of running and was never seen again.
I don't think anybody can say why the West Yorkshire Jubilees were held in such affection............they were just good machines, even in their final days

5699 may be red but BR Maroon it is not and I think that would be clear if it ever stands next to a newly repainted 6233

Perhaps its because they were the top express locos most of those sheds would have had? They wouldn't have had Scots or Pacifics to take the top jobs, and the top levels of care and attention, so more effort was focussed on keeping the Jubes in best condition? (I may well be being ignorant of LMS express motive power distribution here, so please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Having spent much of my life in the Aire Valley I'm delighted that so many LMS 4-6-0s are still operational. Holbeck Jubilees were a daily sight, and were usually kept clean enough to appreciate the livery. One thing about BR green was that, although it darkened with age, it still looked smart if kept reasonably clean. Although I like LMS red, I don't think it weathered as well as green.

Given the number of other Jubilees preserved, I don't object to 45699's "might-have-been" livery. 45690 in black looks smart enough, but there are plenty of Black 5s in this livery.

I hope the Bahamas people don't repeat the exhibition finish on 45596. It looked completely wrong in that condition .... no BR Jubilee was ever turned out like that (SFAIK). To shiny. Too much polished metal.

And I hope they do - the finish wont last forever -- but I agree with you on the Green getting darker, whatever is the lightest of the 50-shades of green that are in evidence would be a good start point Braunton/ Royal Scot rather than UoSA. Would like to see a yellow cab star and stripe at some point too. Never liked LMS red.

Holbeck had Scots, A3's and Britannias on its books during the sixties but never neglected its Jubilees.

You may or may not be right in this instance, but Midland red/crimson lake/maroon is notoriously variable in how it looks, depending on age, lighting, cleanliness, the varnish or lack of, the amount and type of lining on the loco, etc., etc. Not to mention the fact that early colour films weren't good at picking it up well. Even clean, it can look anything from almost scarlet to laterite brown in different conditions.
Still better than green though :)

Didn’t one loco (might have been the 8F which was painted red) get a coat of maroon EWS paint?

There's a few! I think 30120's coat of southern Green in the late '80s was BR diesel green! 34027 as Hogwarts express was EWS Red too,

Nice as it is to see them a bit grubby sometimes, I do think a nice clean machine means someone is taking a pride in their work, if it looks a scruffy bugger chances are no one cares... If it looks nice and clean with little embellishments, someone's taking the time to go extra mile and look after it.

I like a sort of halfway stage between super clean exhibition finish and grubby. As if it’s a real working machine, but not an ornament, yet not neglected either.

Just to throw a spanner in the works BUT I recall that 5694 Bellerophon was one of the class given blue livery when blue was under consideration for the passenger livery in the early days of Nationalisation. Given that the Lined Black, Lined Green and Lined Red versions have already been seen on main line duty howzabout a lined blue version to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of BR's inception ?

Sorry Fred, you are wrong. 45694, along with 45565 and 45604 were painted in experimental light green livery in May/June 1948. 45694 received its BR green livery in March 1952.

Agreed. Blue was considered for and used only on locos which, from 1951, were rated at 8P, i.e. the top rank fleet.
