Spanish scrap

Late 50s pic of a Spanish scrapyard , Irish locos incluing a "Woolworth" and a J15 in the background, various euro types nearer. Just shows the UK experience wasn't unique and wasn't really Beeching's fault.

@Reading General Sometimes, hitting the 'like' button to show appreciation seems inappropriate ... and this is one of those times. What sad photos! I'm trying (and failing) to remember where I saw a comprehensive list of Irish kit sent to El Non-Dignitas Ibérico.

Hells bloody bells! ...... where in Spain is that?

 

Industrias Lopez in Zaragoza - and that photo only shows part of it. Lots of B.G & N.G locos most seem to have been there from the 60's including British built stuff IIRC. Not been there since 1981 but I doubt much has changed.

Those locos in zarazgoa are all for sale, but the price is a bit high, a friend into narrow gauge was offered them in the last couplr of years.

The Irish engines in spain, there was a piece in a book when I was a kid, think it was Whiteghouse's "Railway Anthology" and the first article was about the irish engines being almost smuggled to Spain for scrap.

 

There was an article in 'Railway World' late 1950s/early 1960 about this. 'RW' then was about an A5 size magazine, and I believe it was before Ian Allan bought it.

 

@William Fletcher Loco smuggling would be a new one to add to a very long list of traditional passtimes in Ireland .... It all goes back to the Neolithic cattle raids!

Why not? .... though kindly note William's original statement was that they were almost smuggled. I'm a tad unsure how one almost smuggles something myself, when I think about it!

 

there's also a picture of a Woolworth being scrapped in Mullingar that I never saw before....

 

High time someone published a volume on the death of Irish steam. The scrap lines at Inchicore and Mullingar must surely have been a photographer's dream. Were Cork or Limerick involved in scrapping during the final run-down? I've seen plenty of photos of stored locos which clearly hadn't turned a wheel in ages. There's a study of the original CB&SCR 4-6-0t (conversion) at Rocksavage which had lain around so long that it's GSR drab livery had worn off showing it's original lining quite clearly and Limerick works never looked short of OOS locomotives in old photos either.

 

There was a commnt on here (Or it could have been another forum) that said that the Irish banned the export of scrap as there was a shortage, so the locos were sent as ' runnable' exports but they were really for scrap.

 

Similar to current Indonesian regulations then. We touched on those with reference to Statfold Barn's 0-4-2st "Trangkil No.4" a few weeks ago.
