Would the mods allow us to start such a thread - intentionally that is?

Yes I believe that is true.

Also at some point (1990s I think) there were serious discussions regarding the Swanage Railway buying 34105 from its current owners. Obviously this came to nothing in the end.

Also at one point I heard the Urie locomotive society were considering relocating 499 and 506 to Swanage. Again it obviously didn't come to anything in the end.

Actually Swanage wanted to buy the loco when it was at Barry but missed out. I still remember my "Swanage is in Hampshire" teeshirt..

Yes that’s why I said I believe that is true.

But there was also (I think) another attempt by the Swanage Railway to buy it when it’s current owner considered selling it in the 1990s /2000s.

Indeed so. They all tend to drift into exercises to "prove" that big chufferitis was unavoidable.

With smaller locos being snapped up by groups in the later 60s and early 70s why wasn’t GWR Prairie 4156 purchased before Woodhams cut the loco up in July/August 1980.

    Thanks

Because it happened to be left in the yard (other small engines remained) when Woodhams started without warning (as was his right).

What would be interesting to know is the mechanical condition and the state of the boiler of 4156 and 92085 and was this a contributing factor to why both locos weren’t purchased from Woodhams before 1980. I Understand both locos were close to the cutting area and this is why they were cut up.

    Thanks

The final train of the day on January 1st 2018 prepares to leave Swanage. The railway is now shut until mid February.

Does anyone connected with the Swanage Railway know when bookings for the Wessex Belle for 2018 are likely to open? I rather fancy the idea of taking a friend of mine out for a treat, and the Swanage is nearest to where she lives. Thanks.

Some time this week I think. However going into Herston works at first so may not be visible for a while.

I had heard the same low loader bringing SKP maybe taking the Ivatt back to the MHR, if so the Ivatt still at Swanage but was moved out of the shed area yesterday.

A few images from the first week of engineering works at Swanage, with SR's own "Orange Army". Some are not the greatest quality but have been taken on my small pocket camera on my daily walk to the Post Office.

I am also guessing SKP may have arrived, as this afternoon there were 3 Bulleid tenders at Norden. One is from Manston, one I believe is for probably Eddystone so I am guessing the other is from SKP. Of
course it could have come in advance of the loco.

I don't think we are expecting it back quite that soon. I do hope the Swanage lads aren't too upset it won't be staying with them.

We have loved having 41312, it being a Bouremouth engine and having replaced the M7 tanks in the 1960s makes it one of the most appropriate Locomotives the railway could hire.
Perfect, just simply perfect for us!

Yes, I suspect most are sad that 41312 isn't staying at Swanage. It does seem ideally suited to all requirements.
According to the volunteers' newsletter - brake linkage is being refurbished and, once fitted, 41312 will return to MHR.

The September 2006 issue of British Railways Illustrated has an article on "The Swanage Branch- life after the M7s" which include a few pictures of 4132 at Swanage station in August '64
