The wheels might have been the same diameter, but the 76XXXs axles were a bigger diameter and the actual wheel centre was to a different design. It was not just the number of spokes. As the axles are a bigger diameter, then the axle boxes were wider, meaning that the horn gaps were wider too. The chassis was not the same as the 77XXX's.

Suppose that as the frames are under assembly for 72010 that its classed as no longer missing... ?

So if the conversion of 76077 had gone ahead it would have been more of a look a like rather than a true 77xxx?

The Std 4 moguls are a lovely, well proportioned design IMO. Did the old 4mm scale plastic kit of my childhood have a bearing on my opinion? Perhaps, but from what I saw on the Cambrian Coast Line (amongst others), the class thoroughly deserves the 'Pocket Rocket' nickname earned in preservation.
S'pose 72010 has to be considered a Phœnix currently in the process of rebirth ... unlike t'other Phœnix (D16/2 No.8783 currently projected for completion in 2033), whose project website really needs updating, even if just to say "check out our Facebook page 'coz we don't update this site any more". With the latest "News" dated 'Winter 2012', is that too much to ask? [\End of whinge]
Totally different whinge: The notion of hacking a (potentially extremely useful) 76xxx about to produce something almost, but not quite entirely unlike a 77xxx is anathema to me. What would be the point? If 77021 eventually gets properly underway (a smokebox dart doeth not a locomotive make!), all well and good, but for Bob's sake don't wreck a more powerful loco to produce ..... well, what exactly?

If anyone needed reminding just how critical a project group's credibility is to any new build, just compare 77021's public profile to 82045's .... or the G5 (making really decent progress, although still flying under most peoples' radar, due to .... ???).

I agree. It seems to me that skill levels are advancing so well that replicas will be commonplace roughly around the time the store of unrestored locos run out. Restore 76077 as is and build a new 77021

Absolutely. With the way (some) newbuild groups' skillsets and CAD input are advancing, there could be some mouthwatering projects ahead, though I rather doubt I'll live long enough to see 36006 steam! 76077's upcoming restoration is another matter entirely. That's one I'll be looking forward to seeing.

It seems now too that people are taking on projects and cracking on with them, putting to shame groups that have been beavering away for decades. I'm thinking of the K&ESR 2-8-0T which has made huge strides and I believe they have an 0-6-2T to follow it.

That's very interesting - thanks for that. More Swindon machinations then - so much for standardisation...

Trying desperately not to comment on the misinterpretation of standard yet again.
Please don't forget about the Clan, they are really nice chaps and it will look lovely when its built
Hopefully that 76xxx will be up and running in time to run a ballast train up the Grassington branch one day:cool:

rather than conspiracy theories, can we examine why they were different? I suspect it would be to get weight down and improve route availability or maybe the design was being improved for some reason. You wouldn't expect a standard design to be perfect off the drawing board and neither would you expect it to stay static for all time

The idea of converting it to a 77xxx would have been crazy. It has already got a 76xxx boiler which is reportedly quite good, (and one of the many bits which it isn't missing) so why just discard that for no reason and go to all the expense and hassle of building another one slightly smaller for a 77xxx ? It doesn't make sense at all.

Some conversions do make sense. The Bluebell one to convert 78059 into 84030 is fine as they are tender and tank versions of the same design and as it was missing its tender then converting it into the tank version avoids the need to have to make a totally new one.

Enthusiasts seem desperate to recreate one of a missing class when it many cases it doesn't make sense and the typical family visiting a railway doesn't know one steam Engine from another (or care). They just want something with smoke coming out that goes chuff chuff.

Would be great to see all four surviving 76xxx lined up and in steam.

I'm interested in what has been lent to 76084 and how much of a task for the 76084 loco co Ltd it will be to manufacture or acquire replacements?

I wonder if the new 50% shareholder knew about it when he purchased his shareholding!

I thought it was more like 30%? And I imagine if people on this forum knew about it then it wasn't being kept secret.

Caveat emptor! I'm pretty sure many us could think of another mogul, a certain Hughes 'Crab', which will also need a very close look-see ahead of any potential restoration.

Here's hoping patterns (or at least drawings) exist for whatever odds'n'sods 76077 needs.

Not so much a 'conspiracy theory', but in my opinion more a case, as I said, of Swindon wanting to put their own stamp on something, seeing as many of the Standards had a fair bit of LMS lineage in them. (No surprise there, of course, given Riddles' background). OK, weight? One spoke (I think) less on each driving wheel must surely have been offset by bigger diameter axles and larger axleleboxes? It's an interesting topic, for sure, but after all this time, I wonder if the real reasons are documented?

One would hope that the group was in the process of manufacturing them all, and that would have been the main focus from the moment their goal of fully preparing the loco for mainline running was completed.
I would be interested to know if the 76084 group have had to pay hire fees for the components of 76077 they borrowed, or whether they have not needed to because they have put the time and money into making such components suitable for a loco in service. Either way, this strikes me as an excellent example of preservation groups working together which many more could learn from, and I hope we see more of in the future
