Because a small Sulzer would do far better than either...

I am rather afraid it is silly you. W24 can haul as big a train as can be accommodated in Havenstreet platform. However she is 126 years old and has earned being treated with a bit of respect. Similarly, the two A1xs, although re-boilered are both over 140 years old and include wrought iron in their makeup. The two Hunslets, military railway rather than industrial, are the strongest locomotives available. They burn more coal than the Ivatts which are little hungrier than an A1x.

Ah the "giant" Ivatts. The B.R. 2MT was so similar as to be almost a Chinese copy. So similar that the arrangement devised by B.R. Eastleigh to fit air braking to the latter in connection with abortive transfers to the IOW has been used for the former.

Better? Not for me to say. Different most certainly. from the rhythm of the air pump to the 100% pre- 1925 rolling stock.

Now let's just get back to a T.9 which is almost as old as W24.

And there, Paul, you have it in a nutshell. Your choices are constrained, and the only practical answer is something that is, strictly speaking, oversized and only tenuously authentic for the line. Just as other railways have made different choices based on the constraints they are under, and the operation they choose to run.

One assumes that an identical argument can be made for using Bulleids (exactly the same age as the Ivatts) in order to treat the M7, T9 (scarcely any younger than the O2 and Terriers) with the respect they deserve?

Really Paul, you need to stop trying to find ever smaller pinheads to dance on in order to justify your opinions which seem to twist and turn every which way without any kind of logic.

Except of course those Ivatt's had been gifted to the IoW railway, you can't just swop such gifts easily and rightly so.

They managed it with 46447 and the E1 in a roundabout way.

Anyway back on topic. Is there going to be an official announcement from Swanage and the NRM about this new agreement, and the reasons for 30120 leaving Bodmin?

I'm almost certain I've joined you on Paul's "ignore" list and I agree that his logic - if you can call it that - is arrant nonsense but once again he has come into a thread and we all end up talking about him instead of the original subject.

So is the MHR a line that is more appropriate for a wide firebox Pacific? If so, why?

46447 is only on loan to East Somerset Railway - it still belongs to IoWSR. Also it is too big (long) for their railway although it is expected to make a visit there this year.

That's not really an answer though Paul. I thoroughly agree with your reasoning behind using Ivatts to give the older locos a gentler semi-retirement, that makes a lot of sense. So why does Tom's example not?

Paul livens up the discussions IMO even though I don’t agree with quite a bit of what he says

He certainly does! This place wouldn't be the same without him. I used to get a bit too drawn into circular arguments with him but now I enjoy reading his contributions, even though I often feel like I've seen them before...

I believe that the 30120 announcement is imminent. A permanent home at Swanage would create the finest collection of LSWR motive power. With 563, 120 and 53, the possibilities are certainly exciting.

As for too many Pacifics, that is up for debate, but as part of the new agreement, all 5 are based at the railway and the railway can hire them out. A Summer time Pacific for Ivatt swap would be ideal for both MHR and SR of that I have no doubt.

in the peak the ivatt is at its limits on 5 bogies , where as on the easier gradients of the SR it is capable of managing 5 with ease and i'm sure that a bulleid would be an attraction on a line that does make them work, and would be benificial to both lines hopefully attracting more paying customers on both lines

How about sending a second Bulleid to the MHR in exchange for 499, to further enhance the LSWR collection? ;)
