The Official SVR Facebook has images of reballasting work near Bewdley Tunnel, involving removing contaminated ballast.

The arrival of the class 40 diesel** underlines the growing number of large diesel locomotives at Kidderminster depot. I wonder if they might be trying to somehow engineer some more cover for these locomotives, maybe a "shelter" arrangement over the track nearest the Harriers boundary?
Big diesels apart, I suspect ( but just idle thoughts...) that an incoming smaller loco would be useful now that all the EE type 1's have gone. The 33 being the only mid-range type.)

** Does a type 40's long bogie arrangement fit through all the SVR pointwork?

8 wheeled tenders manage just fine it seems, so what is effectively 6+2 wheeled bogie should be ok.

The pinch points are KD P2 TO 2EL crossover and the loop to main crossover - low speed limit will apply. Some sidings will also be OOB but they can be easily e avoided

D9551 is presumably the orange loco in the shed headshunt at Bridgnorth, but 37688 is not one I know as an SVR resident.
I thought the point about the EE type 1's was that as a "thunderbird" they could be up and running quickly. Does that apply to a class 37 as well?

37688 is one of the already-announced guests at the 2018 Diesel Gala.

Ah, a Gala guest. That wasn't the point. Lets try again, do we ( sorry, the SVR) have a quick start thunderbird diesel at Kidderminster following the departure of the EE type 1's ? I don't know if the 33 is a quick start loco, but otherwise is it likely to be an 09 shunter at best?

Anything that's not a diesel Hydralic and needs to be preheated before it starts work, eg class 35 Hymek, Class 42 Warship and class 52 Western. So in theory the 33 and or any one of the 5 class 50's.

Matt has managed to get a 50 in service fairly quickly in the past

That's good, thanks for the clarification.

An idle thought, but I wonder if the SVR now has more serviceable diesels, excluding the shunters, than it has serviceable steam locomotives?

    No ulterior motive, just curious....

Open to correction, but the SVR website suggests the following are or will be in service:

    Steam:
    813
    1450
    1501
    2857 (intermediate overhaul)
    7714
    7802
    34027
    43106
    80072 (hire)

    Diesel:
    D9551 (Class 14)
    50031
    50035
    50049
    D1062
    D1015
    33108 (guest since May 2017)
    40135 (hire for 2018)

Of the 5 class 50s mentioned, I believe 50044 is under overhaul and 50007 has no running agreement with the SVR.

    50007's owners are the same as '31, 35, 44 and 49 though.

For resident locos capable of being rostered for usual passenger service it's 6-6. Including visitors it will in May be 7-9 in favour of diesel until 80072 departs and, hopefully, 75069 returns.

Would an 09 on six Mark Is keep time, I wonder?

Perhaps keeping time would not be the first consideration if a diesel is sent out as a rescue locomotive, but it does imply hauling a coach rake and a locomotive that has failed, be it steam or diesel!

    Runs for cover....

Given the train has failed you are going to loose time simply getting the rescue loco to the failed train, say 20 to 30 mins. so keeping section times is the least of ones concerns

Agreed, and without tempting providence for 2018, is in fact a rare event.
