Realy disappointing that this happened. :( But, what will happen now with the planned museum? Is the project put on ice, or do they have a "plan B"?

Unfortunately one of the 'unwritten rules' of lottery funding is that you must not say if we don't get this funding we have the following options to fund otherwise they will turn you down.

Well we only have it as the Major government was worried that people would play the European lotteries instead. It is, unfortunately, like most lotteries a 'highly regressive tax' but a number of UK railways have benefited from it.

    As for our oil fund.......

There are no high pressure gas pipes on the site. Not even medium or intermediate pressure ones.

There is, however, a rather large, and rather critical, water trunk main . . .

Where exactly is this water main? It would be useful to see a plan of the site showing the location of the main, so we understand the constraints it causes. I guess that plain track over it might not be a problem, but a permanent building would be.
I assume that moving it out of the way has been ruled out as disproportionately expensive?

They say it's because lottery sales are down that there are significantly less funds for grants... :(

Not sure if it's affected their administration costs or management bonuses though... ;)

Maybe some applications are considered as more essential than others?

The fall in sales is real enough though.

To judge by the number of adverts for special offers from other purveyors of games of chance across the board (broadcast, on-line and via email), methinks overall rates of shirts being bet on long odds outcomes are on the way down. Wish we could say the same for food and energy prices! :(

Maybe the HLF is not keen on giving money to a company controlled by one individual?

I've never been involved directly in an HLF application (other than progress summaries at Trustee Meetings), though a group I belong to have received a couple of largish grants (£60-150K a time )in the past for (non-rail) restoration & improvement works. Surely, if the ownership issue was a problem, that would have been made clear before allowing any application to be made - It's not just a "fill in a big form and send it to us" process, as continuous contact/liason takes place between the Organisation and the HLF throughout the bid proceedure.
Appears to be more of a case of "wheres the money gone?" across the board at the moment. Our group have another, significant, road vehicle restoration project waiting in the wings for an HLF application to go off, but are waiting for them to sort out what their new application criteria are before wasting (considerable) volunteer hours on preparing something that doesn't stand a chance of getting anywhere!
Other grant options than the HLF are available from a variety of groups, but they tend to be for much smaller amounts (we just got one for £7500), so if you need serious money, you would have to try applications to multiple sources which causes problems if some of them decline...

The Mountsorrel operation has no admission charge to visit any of the attractions on the site, the only charges (obviously) being in the cafe that is part of the existing "heritage" complex, so it doesn't fit in with the usual classification of a "commercial" company. Once trains start running up the branch on a more regular basis, it will just be another attraction to visit on the enlarged GCR operation.

Would you care to be a little more specific as to which company you are referring to in the context of this thread?

As Johann says, i.e. the company which appears to have issued the press release.
