The initiated will know the difference. The uninitiated may not know, but it won't matter to them. Many will think that the A1 and the A2 are both Flying Scotsman, anyway. Add Royal Scot into the mix and things get even more muddled!

Most obvious difference is A1 wheels are 6'8", A2 wheels are 6'2". I think there may have been further detail differences, for example only 4 of the A2s were built with Kylchap Blast Pipes and and Double Chimneys, whereas all A1s were. A few of the later A1s, and Tornado, were also fitted with roller bearings

Love this, it had a new cylinder cast, and already the "froth" has started about what colour to paint her.

Br Green, for me, any variation.

You know what, Blue Peter is one of my favourite locos and I have many happy childhood memories of travelling behind her on the Moors. Just get her running again and I'll buy a ticket for a ride!

Fantastic machine. Still holds the preserved steam era record from Carlisle-Beattock Summit. Got close with the Blue Riband a few times too.

The Ayr Raider tour, That was a 14th birthday present for me, ever since then to say I love 60532 would be an understatement! I fancy the pants off it! And just to add my own 2 cents towards the livery BR green for me with Sky blue plates, and maybe some time in the future a chance to wear 60525's plates?

Too hell with confusing the public. Paint No.7, BP, 4472 apple green, and keep tornado as such.

I can see the tactic employed by the BR mob, but painting them all the same colour would actually highlight the differences between the machines. BR liveries, with the exception of Blue, are dull IMO. Pre grouping are much more fun.

Ugh, cant believe iv engaged in this..I feel unclean..

I suspect you'll have your work cut out convincing the SNG people to paint their loco in a livery she never carried.

Clearly the humor was too subtle. This paint thing is taken farrrrr to seriously on here.

I can remember her original 'return to service' in 1970 being featured on the TV programme (and the front cover of that year's Blue Peter Annual!), so was delighted when NELPG restored her that I, along with a number of other Santa Special regulars (in full costume - I was half of Tweddledum and Tweedledee!) was able to 'stow away' serving refreshments on the donors special when she returned to service service during the Santa Specials in 1991, but even more so that I was guard of her first public train after restoration on Boxing Day.

When the donors' train did a photo runpast at Levisham, as the photographers lined up and the train set back for a run into the station, a 6' tall 'Mad March Hair' was giving hand signals out of the back window, much to the horror of the photographers that he might still be there when it ran through for photos!

Can't recall whether this was the donors' special or Boxing Day first public run.

Perhaps some might recall it's last Edinburgh - Aberdeen run with the 10:30 SO Edinburgh - Aberdeen service on 27 August 1966 - here standing at Leuchars Junction marking time.

I was there that weekend. Deep in GWR country, at the GWR 150th celebrations and all that.
Best looking loco there, I thought.

A2s like all the LNER Pacifics had double regulator handles. The normal the linkage went through a central stuffing box on the boiler backplate, those with the multivalve regulator had separate ridding either side of the boiler.

Indeed, but I was wondering why the rhs not the left. Assuming the driver spends most of his time on the lhs, it would seem mechanically sounder to have the linkage more direct, on the same side, rather than transmitting the movement across the backhead first. The five (left hand drive) V2s fitted with a similar regulator in 1938 had the rodding on the left hand side (although their regulators were replaced during the war for unknown reasons), as did the Brits etc. So what prompted BR to specify the linkage on the rhs for these A2s?

The only thing I can think of is not interferring with the drivers forward view but I can't see it does

Does she not also have a arrangement on the same side to the chime whistle, that was behind her smoke deflector.

Have seen no recent pics to confirm.
