On 6201, exhaust from the inside and outside cylinders would flow at the same times, so keeping the flows separate or combining them and then splitting them again between twin blast pipes would have made little if any difference. On the Queens, the exhausts would have been at different times, so (except at low speed with long exhaust times) only one chimney would have been in use at any one instant.

Edit: none of which has much if anything to do with smoke deflectors!

Apart from the fact that smoke deflectors were often added to Locos in conjunction with a change to a double chimney...

Oh I don't know ..... exhaust velocity, or lack thereof, has a fair bit to do with whether or not a loco requires deflectors. If it is a digression off-topic, it's a rather more tangental one than certain of the complete departures we've all witnessed ..... and many of us (myself included) have committed! :)

No need for deflector here, start at about 1.00 in. Oh dear I've no idea why it won't allow playback here..... Have to look into it.

Looks like a user setting when uploaded. Plays OK on YouTube ..... and it's a lovely clip.

Thanks, yes I found out what was wrong, YouTube have changed things and although I invariably allowed embedding quite a few of me videos appear to have been changed??? It's a good spot as there are several foot crossings in the approach so you get a whistle for each one.

How effective were the stumpy little wing plates either side of the chimney on the A2/2s? Presumably they weren't fatally useless at clearing smoke but it always struck me as odd that they never received A1 or A3 style plates, when the A2/1s were similarly equipped but received the former later on

A few A3s got them soon after being fitted with Double Kylchaps, but they were quickly found to be pretty useless and replaced with the Witte type. Quite why the ones on the A2/2s were never changed at that time remains a mystery, other than perhaps they were slated for early withdrawal.
