This thread in the historical forum of Drehscheibe-online.de has created considerable interest concerning, of all things, the photographer who appears in the second shot. My friend, who took the photos, is convinced he was a Brit.

If any NatPres reader recognises himself, on what was probably a unique event, a PM would be appreciated so that I could conclude the discussion!

I've posted this here, as it's not "International Heritage".

On all my visits to Rheine in the 1970s I never saw the 011s and 012s on anything other than passenger trains. Perhaps this was a unique event. I take it that the wagons were empties going back to Emden.

You might enjoy this clip taken aboard sister loco 01 1075.

You can clearly hear the three cylinder sound.

The point of the ditty was that iron ore wagons, given the wind resistance across the open tops, were equally hard to pull whether they were loaded or empty.

Remember seeing them on their final day in 1975 - on Saturday 31/05 all diagrammed steam services worked by 012 (063 / 066 / 081 / 100) with 012063 woking the last northbound steam device out of Rheine on E3265 but overnight Class 216 / 220 arrived and the 012s were stored on Rheine depot. The only exception was 012061 which was working the staff outing from Hamm to Norddeich and staff insisted on using 012061 which had been reserved for this duty leaving Rhine shed with a line-up of dead 012055 / 063 / 066 / 075 / 080 / 081 / 082 /100 awaiting disposal.

The one that was at Carnforth (012-104-6) for a few years is coming to the end of an overhaul in Krefeld and is already booked for mainline trips in the Autumn. http://www.faszination-dampf.de/index.html. KM1 in Germany are planning live steam versions in Gauge One..........
