Just a little bit of fun. Did a couple of (rough) calculations and worked out that this is how 'Flying Scotsman' would be like, if she was doing 100mph in steam days. The locations included are Crofton, Pilning, Melton Mowbray and Charfield. Hope you like the video.

Clearly speeded up - the 47 on the back can only do 95 ;)

Not quite, 47/7s were passed for 100mph but I think the reason 47's were passed for 95 was Brush and BR knew if they passed them for 100 drivers would try and get a bit more out of them, but then you'd have the power unit working right at its limit and if it went bang... My memory's slightly hazy but I think it's something like that.

I'm looking forward to this, his various Channel 5 programs about engineering have been very watchable. It won't just feature 60103 either - his instagram shows filming on the KESR and with Tornado.

Agree completely, did it with a good degree of knowledge, enthusiasm, and will undoubtably attract new people to the charter market.

It may be entertaining but I'm concerned at serious (IMHO) omissions especially NO reference to ECJS and the train; No reference to the Castle v A1 trials that led to the upgrade to the A3 specification or the fact that part of the loco's fame is due to it being the first Pacific to be released from Doncaster Works by the LNER. Less important but worthy of mention was the fact that Gresley standing by 4498 marked the LNER's celebration of the production of the 100th Pacific locomotive to a Gresley design or that IIRC it was the first time a locomotive had been named after its designer during the person's incumbency in post.

Pedantic perhaps but it does detract from my appreciation of the presenter and the programme.

He can only read out, what is given to him in the form of a script.

Would very much doubt he researched any of it himself.

Sorry Fred, but that is pedantic ;). It's a programme for a wide audience not a bunch of railway historians like us. WE know all the detail and I doubt the average viewer missed anything really.

Agree with that. Wasn't overly impressed with the programme but some good footage nonetheless. It's a programme for mass consumption and in that respect it's done its job well.
Looking forward to the next episode though.

The programme successfully perpetuated the skilful efforts of the LNER publicity department, long before what we now know as "hype".
I accept that it was for a wider audience, and it was a much more balanced offering than some previous efforts. Full marks for a long overdue explaination of the difference between FS the loco and The FS the train.

Having gone into detail about the appearance at the Empire Exhibition though, it would have been appropriate to mention the involvement of Caerphilly Castle and the subsequent changes to A3 spec. That wouldn't fit with the LNER "hype" though!
I've always thought that FS was no better than any of the other A3's, and I doubt if it registered any differently for footplate crews or maintenance staff on a day-to-day basis.

Don't get me wrong - having had the privilege of going through the corridor tender and onto the footplate at 60mph on the mainline I can appreciate the appeal, but it does seem overblown at times!

For me, the loco's history since preservation is much more significant, and I look forward to the next episode.

I like a chuckle at the expense of GWR fans as much as the next man, but to fail to mention them on at least three counts -
First UK pacific, first 'Timed' run that night have just made 100mph, and fastest scheduled service prior to the 1930's speed up, must have got some of them really hot under the collar.
Its still difficult to pin the facts down on the castle exchange and subtleties of gear travel may have been lost on the audience so I can see why that got missed....
