I've always thought those "black lined in red only" liveries looked rather nice (also used by the LMS, L&Y and others). However I've often seen people describing them as dull, especially compared to the BAR style lined black with the extra white lining (LNWR style).
I wonder how much of this is due to black-and-white films not picking up the red lining very well? Likewise early colour films didn't show the red very distinctly. Has this left an impression that these liveries were little more than plain black?

Full circle. The horseshoe appeared in the early MNs but soon replaced by the circular Southern plate.

Have a look in the mirror, and read what the original post said, does not surprise me a suggestion descends into a pedantic view, for something that may well have worked, the only benefit would be to photographers.

Next time have a look for your own updates, because I wont post any further ones..............

Unfortunately, this forum attracts two types of poster. One type respects other peoples points of view while not necessarily agreeing with them, engages in intelligent and constructive debate, and generally contributes to the knowledge out there. The second type relies on hurling insults, possibly because it cannot think of an intelligent argument. I am more than happy to engage with the first type, and might even persuade him to my point of view, or - you never know - might be persuaded to his point of view.

    I ignore the second type.

Paint half of it on the bufferbeam. In the style of 92 Squadron have the British Railways number painted on front [admittedly above the bufferbeam in her case].

They do indeed suit the black better than the green, methinks.

I'd agree with that, but why does Apple green suit the B12? Is it maybe because the post war didn't have lettering didn't have the shading?
