Some of these streamlined locos seem to be serious attempts to design a casing to minimise wind resistance eg for example A4 Mallard. Others seems to be just cheap efforts to cash in on the fashion and get some publicity and do nothing technically. Often you can see this by how long they lasted. Cheap efforts often only lasted a few months.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that streamlining was only effective above 90mph and very few trains were timed at that speed in the 30's. Being the fashion of the time the pressure to streamline locos (including the A4's and Coronations) came from the respective railways' publicity departments, sometimes against the wishes of the engineers who regarded it as an unnecessary hindrance to maintenance . It certainly didn't last long on Manorbier Castle although it may have kept its wedge shaped cab front.

Usually, but not only associated with the outright need for speed.....

When the West Highland line was dieselised, the effects of sudden exposure to strong headwinds on speed with the new boxy body shapes became immediately apparent on exposed stretches, most notably when coming from the lee afforded by a horseshoe bend into the teeth of a full-on Atlantic gale.

That makes a very pleasant change from the wall-to-wall black with red wheels generally associated with Central European steam! Rather a fine looking loco.

523(4-8-4 of 1944. )at Australian Rail Museum Adelaide, last October .I nearly missed this one tucked away round the back. 520 looks better in green I think.

Magnificent machine. Cabbed that at Leipzig in the last days of the DDR. Boiler ticket now expired and talk on the German steam sites is there is no money for the overhaul.

Must not forget the Belgian Class 12 streamlined 4-4-2, one of which still survives:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCB_Type_12

There was a proposal on the LNER in 1936 to streamline one of the Great Northern Ivatt 4-4-2s, using a shortened version of the A4 streamlined casing. The idea was not pursued, but a similar shortened A4 casing was applied in 1937 to two of the Class B17 4-6-0s. Some pictures of these engines can be seen here:

    https://railway-photography.smugmug.com/LNERSteam/Gresley-Locomotives/Gresley-B17/Gresley-B17/

The two streamlined B17s lost their wheel-skirts in 1941, while the rest of the streamlining was removed in 1951.
