Yep, NRM has preservation first, running trains a long way second. Which is their job.

Wouldn't the GCR be ideal for a set of troughs, straight and level and has the necessary derugation to run at pax soaking speeds too ;)

It suddenly occurred to me how the carriage toilets would discharge onto the track, right where the troughs are...:O

If this winters relay of Newtondale Reverse curve has gone to scheme then we have approx 350m of level track there as well.
Only trouble is its on a tight curve and 95mm cant.
What length do you need to pick up a reasonable amount at 20 - 25?

Bit more complicated than that... You need not only the level, but also a slight gradient at each end to reduce the chances of being too slow with the control and ripping the bucket off on the end of the trough. And you need enough length not only to pick up water, but also to get the bucket up and down. Its a decidely non trivial bit of engineering I suspect.

Doubtlessly true, but remind me ..... How long ago was it they said that about 71000's cylinders? 6023's rear wheelset? Or a new boiler section for ..... (well, you get the idea! :))

As I'm pretty sure there's no conceivable actual operational need for them on any preserved line (and as near zero percent chance of them re-appearing on the big railway as makes no odds), methinks the chances of a working water trough will come down to some folks with deep pockets wanting to see one in action again.

Odds from the bookies anyone? ;)

You could say the same thing about TPO equipment.

I could see someone saying 'yeah why not' and if they've got the cash to burn then why not. Not what I'd spend my fortune on and whether you'd make any money on it ie photo charters etc I doubt.

IIRC I read somewhere that the actual rail level was lowered slightly over the troughs so the scoop was lowered before the trough and then dipped in as the rail level dropped. It could then be raised 'at leisure' - well at least before the next crossing etc. Without this feature I suspect the trough ends would need replacing on an almost daily basis ;)

I mentioned this only because it was such an integral part of daily operations (apart from SR, obviously). Is there anywhere on the GCR that could be used?

In view of the weather this week - some new build snowploughs wouldn’t go amiss.;)

The GC would be the only place really for a set of troughs, but would you be able to get a realistic length of them ? I think its one of those WIBN things.
Back to subject, has the A1 trust formally decided on the next project after the P2? Or is it just hearsay it may be a V4? Or indeed anything , have they got a 'next project'.

Unfortunately the G.C.R. is far from level, the longest stretch being on the GCRN section just north of the A60 road bridge, this is however on top of a long embankment. Not really a convenient spot for photographers. Drone users would be quite happy apart from having the problem of those overhead cables crossing the route near the back end of the Brush works site.
