Civilians don't salute officers, and in general uniform wearers salute officers only when wearing headdress.
Dons tin hat...there will no doubt be exceptions.

One salutes the uniform, not the man. Magpies too .... but that's a bit different of course. :)

Aesthetically, there is no real difference between one end of a steam locomotive and the other. I think it's just that we think it should be running forwards.

When I was young and had an 00 scale train set I always ran the engines tender or bunker first if I could. Then again I like the look of a Southern Q1 so possibly my aesthecics are all wrong!

I, for one, would like to express my thanks to everyone who worked so hard to put together the 'military train', it looked really impressive and was a credit to all those involved. Teamed up with the S160 I thought it really looked the part. The soldiers riding in the brake van was a nice touch. Were they Minehead or Bishops Lydeard Home Guard or regular army?

So nice to read some of the positive comments about the gala. It looks like a good show was put on. I have huge admiration for the hard working volunteers on the WSR and heritage railways everywhere.

My father always used to doff his cap (or pretend to if he wasn't wearing one) and say "Good morning/afternoon/evening, sir" when he saw a magpie. Used to confuse people the first time he did it in their presence!! He was the only person I knew that ever did this. I do, on occasion, do it myself these days!!

A quick Google provides a number of myths and legends about magpies.
