We can presume that the tight clearance between St Denys and Fareham (I think it is at or near Hamble) must only apply for westbound trains. Not historically regarded as a very gauge-friendly stretch of line

It's one of those amusing little quirks of main line steam these days that passengers on GBXI will be hauled through the New Forest by a Gresley A4, but will be pulling out of York behind a Merchant Navy!

Yes, spotted that last minute switch from the ideal loco. Looks like that is a juggle that's been forced on WCRC by something external - as usual. Nothing from the RTC in the paperwork I've seen to explain what is going on.

Correct. Believe it may be a gauging problem. Lucky that anything else was available.

Friday 20th 1Z65 Scarborough to Carlisle is indicating train held at York Holgate Sidings for 50 mins? Does anyone know the timing and movement around York and would BIL move from NRM to Holgate where FS will take the train for loco change?
The train is shown at P3 at York for 4 mins from 10.10 but then at Holgate from 10.17 to 11.07 before heading off towards Leeds.

This is for the loco change from 60103 to 35018. The full details including all the associated steam movements are shown in
    www.uksteam.info/tours/t18/t0420a.htm as usual.

Well it’s certainly maintained and performs like a Riley Black 5!

45212, is owned by the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and is leased to Riley & Son (E) Ltd on a 10-year agreement. That would include overhauls probably.

To all intents and purposes 5212 is no different from the way 5407 and 4871 are managed, for the duration of the lease, so the point you are making eludes me.

Just clarifying the fact that it is not owned by Rileys.

The actual point is that, contrary to the original forecast, to no great surprise, a "Riley 5" has been required to "rescue" a situation. The substantive owner of the actual loco is surely immaterial to that observation?

I see there's a LE path out of KGX after the departure of the A3. This is good news and bodes well for the rest of tour.

Only 2 days to go now, am looking forward to this apart from having to get up at 4am to get down to London but it should be worth it to see how 35018 BIL performs on the S & C on Friday.

It's interesting to see the path the shadowing diesel takes, straight up the ECML to Peterborough while the tour turns off and goes through Cambridge and Ely before reaching Peterborough.

Hoping we have an enjoyable tour with hopefully no major problems.

I'm in coach G 6F if anyone wants to say hi.

Custom and practice has been for a diesel to shadow GB tours (and I think that the premium price one pays reflects this additional expense - path, crew etc). Anyway, the diesel will be needed at times for stock movements such as taking the train to Grange and 'supporting' the train through Wales.

As the stock will be coming to Grange after overnighting at base in Carnforth it seems overkill to send a diesel round the country shadowing the tour when they have 20+ perfectly good ones stood in the yard each day at Carnforth to make the short ECS move? ;)
