Agreed, the first pic. is green a shade too light, looks better with a spot of weathering. BR Green and GWR green aren't quite the same are they. ( unless the loco was assembled at Swindon) but perhaps they should be.

10A back in the day pictures. What a fantastic place that was in the early/mid 80's. Did all the fives including 44767 start their preserved mainline careers off there apart from 5305?

No not all as there had been other places with Black Fives that did go back to the main line eg 45110 & 45212 (& 5305)

With regards to the Green used on 44932 there are other things to consider when comparing the colour like the filon sheets in the roof for that internal shot but also the colour cast caused by aging colour photographs. Of course those of us with longer memories will remember the other Black Five tuned out in BR drab green - - - -44806.

Although 45212 has only operated on the mainline after its latest overhaul by Riley & Sons. In its early KWVR days it wasn't a mainline loco as far as I remember. 5025 became a mainline runner, but not '5212.

As I remember it, '5025 went straight to Scotland from WVR, with no mainline running.

I do believe you are correct Sir. 5025's mainline running commenced when based at Aviemore.

When overhauled at Hunslet how did it get to the KWVR?

I'm not just going off my photo when I said that the green was a strange shade. It was a paler shade than BR green in real life, and noticeably so, almost a dark grass geeen. I thought it looked just wrong. The pic I posted isn't a scanned print, but a copy from the original negative and it's had a trip through PP to even out any problems with exposure and age.

I remember 45212 famously appearing covered in wallpaper stuck on with Solvite on the telly ads (''Wallpapering a steam engine?!''). I've still got the old copy of Railway World tucked away somewhere that contained an item on the event.

IIRC the green was a variant of Apple Green that was applied to passenger locomotives in early BR days when a standard colour scheme was being investigated. The fact was commemorated by early preserved Class 5 locomotives based at Carnforth where other liveries were adopted.

Except that Solvite didn't really do the job completely. Some edges and corners had to be stuck down with Araldite! :Joyful:

    Probably!

In addition the Furness Red applied to (4)5407 looked terrible!

It's a shame 44932 does not seem likely to be operational this year as it would have been a good opportunity to recreate those pioneering days of preservation by turning it out in BR passenger green. Personal opinion is it looked good and I have fond memories of it looking different to the other duo 45407 and 44871 at Carnforth in the early 70s. Is my memory at fault to recall a trip to Morecambe with 4771 and 4498?

E S Cox states the colours used for the presentation to management were Apple Green, GWR Green, Malachite and Black. Red wasn't included because the LMS influence was so strong elsewhere.

Fred Kerr is quite correct. Jubilee Class 4-6-0s 45565 Victoria, 45604 Ceylon and 45694 Bellerophon were painted in a light green livery in 1948.

    Dear Mods,

I'd be delighted to hear that 44767 has a new owner, but whenever I look at this thread in the hope of some interesting news on this front, all I see is yet another livery debate! Please could all the livery-related posts be moved to the "Liveries" thread?

    Thanks!
