Rack Railways in the UK and in Europe

I could not find anything on this general theme on the Forum. There are references to individual rack railways on other threads, but what about collating as much information about these railways as we can on one thread?

I believe that we only have the one example in the UK, the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Are there others?

I am aware of one in France which is no longer in operation but which carried passengers from sea level in Monaco to La Turbie in the hills behind the principality. I have pulled together a short history of the line and as many photographs of it in operation as I can find.

What others are there across Europe?

 

I'm not too sure you could call it 'Europe' as such, but there was once an interesting rack railway on Madiera.

After closure, the now rail-less route provided an unusual tourist day out in the form of sleds dragged hither and thither by locals wearing traditional garb. Maybe it still does ....

 

There's also the Beamish Cog Railway at Beamish museum. Only 10 1/4" gauge though!

 

I think Madeira qualifies ..... isn't it part of Portugal?
