Yes! Myself being one of them! The power units in 68's sound like a cross between a class 35 'Hymek' and a Class 55 'Deltic' from a standing start they have to rev up before moving off, wonderful!

Haddiscoe, Class 47s, 67s, 68s, Trans Pennine legal training and what can, or cannot be polished.

How about getting back to something more relevant, like what cat litter the feline resident of BL prefers?

I believe that the cat prefers to go out rather than be confined. Hopefully it won't be much longer before she is out of the cast.

Why change the habit of a thread's lifetime!

I AM NOT GOING TO COUNT but any guesses as to how many of the 625 pages are actually about 'West Somerset Railway Operations'? ;)

(Indeed, the quoted post is not about operations as such, albeit it is about feline movements!)

I nearly misread that as very bad news for the cat, but then realised that the current situation is bad news for those around her.

While we are being O/T can anyone confirm or deny whether, if you have two steam locomotives of the same class double-heading, the exhaust beats tend to synchronise?

It's not needed but nevertheless it would be nice to have a WSR pilot like 7822.

Never heard of that. And why should they? The two locos are totally independent.

Not in my experience. (I took a part of my firing test on double-headed locos of the same class...)

Even if you have two locos of the same class, they may well have wheels of marginally different diameter depending on where each of them is in tyre wear. If they are coupled together and therefore running at the same speed, they may well be doing slightly different revs per minute. So at best, they will tend to drift in and out of phase with each other over time: if they remained exactly in phase (i.e. identical rpm with different diameter wheels), one of them would be permanently slipping.

Well, they are coupled together and the force the locos exert on each other will vary over the cycle of the cylinders and hence the cycle of the force the wheels exert on the track will be different if the beats are in sync from when they are not in sync, which could lead to small amounts of slipping being more likely in the "out of sync" condition than the "in sync" condition, which would therefore tend to bring the beats in line. I'm not saying this does happen, just positing a mechanism.

    Hi,
I have heard it described Garratts micro-slip and engine units become in phase with each other so resulting in 4 exhaust beats rather than 8 per revolution of the wheels- whether this is correct or not I don't know.
2 independent engines, driven and operating independently would seem unlikely to me given all the potential variables and I assume would end up with the scenario Tom describes going in and out of phase.
I'm off to watch some videos of Garratts and fairlies operating to see.....

They’re ugly, but they make a decent noise for modern traction. 67s/59s/66s all sound a bit wet in comparison.

Not entirely unknown for apparently unattractive locomotives to generate a following...
