Lynton and Barnstaple - Operations and Development

there is one section highlighted between button lane and twitchen lane,this isnt owned by either trust or ea but is where a road has been laid over the formation,there are remnants of occupation bridges and an aqueduct and also a good view down over 2 high embankments

 

Looking at the map then an initial extension to Paracombe looks to be the next move? Or will they wait untill they can construct the whole line to Blackmoor?

 

The ENPA planning committee specified conditions when the applications were granted. One of these stipulates that the Trust must own all the trackbed required for the proposed extension before construction work can commence on any part of it.

My understanding is that this condition attempts to address two major concerns. Firstly, that the inevitable disruption to the National Park might reach unacceptable proportions if the process became dragged out by land acquisition delays. Secondly, it prevents Parracombe being used as a temporary terminus, as the local infrastructure can't realistically support this.

There's also the small matter of the TWAO, without which the railway cannot cross Killington Lane. Oh, and the funding, which also has to be in place!

 

And the fact that one landowner has made clear that the TWAO will need compulsory purchase powers in order to secure the trackbed....

 

Does anyone know what the orginal maximum loading gauge of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway was?

 

I wonder if the landowner is related to the landowner the Rother Valley are having problems with, or just a pair of awkward so and so`s

 

Given the large number of land owners who had acquired sections of trackbed along the full length of the line, I guess statistically there were always likely to be a few "unenthusiasts"!

 

Lets hope they can buy Blackmoor and the other bits to pull it off then.

Do you mean absolute maximum, or "to what dimensions were L&B locomotives and rolling stock constructed "?

 

I was meaning the absolete maximum. I think it is about 10ft high, and about 8ft across.

 

Passenger stock was 8'7” heighth at cetre, 7'6” to the cantrail. All were 6' width., nos 5 and 6 were 7'2” over the duckets.

MW's were 8'11” tall, 6'7” wide, Lyn was 7'2” max width and 8'11” high.

 

I think the information that Leafent is looking for is "at what height and/or width would a load in a L&B open wagon have been considered out of gauge?" Hope this helps clarify.

 

Extreme width is measured over the widest part usually over door and commode handles. These usually add 3" to the loading gauge rather than width over body.

Although its not part of the current plan to extend the existing railway as far as Snapper Halt, you may be interested to view the rebuilt Platelayers' Hut which has been completed at that station site currently owned by Exmoor Associates.

What a super piece of work! it may be small, but it is little gems of personal projects like this which when put together, will really make the rebuilt railway what it deserves to be.
Apropos of nothing, back in my early teens when I first discovered railways, I remember reading Dendy Marshall's History of the Southern Railway. In the back was an appendix of stations closed by the Southern Railway, and I distinctly remember one which caught my eye, that being Snapper Halt closed 29th September 1935. It seemed such a strange name for a lonely place, a long-vanished tiny little dot on an old railway map- something from far away, from the distance enhanted.
How amazed I would have been then, as a 13 year old to know that vanished place in the woods would be back from the dead, if not yet welcoming trains, in 2018.

Well done guys. It's nice to see a proper attention to detail - i.e. lime mortar. You're setting the bar for the L&B!

The halt has changed so much from the rhododendron tunnel of 20 years ago. Still a lovely location, wish I lived closer to give a hand.
