That the Prince of Wales is a bit of a traditionalist, likes Peasant Farmers, Victorian technology, Youth employment schemes (in coal mines, chimneys etc...) maybe ?

The discussion was about the naming of the loco as Prince of Wales and its connections with Charles, some people pointed out that he is not always very popular and has some very strong views on some subjects. I offered up my reasons for disliking the name/connection, I was asked to explain so I did as briefly as I could without it becoming too much of a polemic. His involvement in Romania is not well known the uk.

Put simply, Charles is not the sort of person I would want to associate with. But others do.

If you want to play connect the circle - Charles is a backer of the Mihai Eminescu trust (a British charity involved in Romania but named after the Romanian national poet who was also an antisemite (again not who I would choose to name my charity after)), the Mihai Eminescu trust is one of the backers/supporters of the attempt to restore the narrow gauge Sibiu-Agnita railway (facebook page) (which has also done exchanges with the Ffestiniog)

Indeed, no one of course remembers that the Prince of Wales in the LNWR Prince of Wales was the abdicating, Hitler saluting future Edward VIII.

No doubt when HRH QE2 shuffles off, then Wills will have a turn on the Footplate, as will young George...

Honestly, I think there should be a ban on the discussion of naming locomotives, just like there ought to be one on colour schemes. These topics generate more useless heat and wasted breath than the rest of the threads combined! Is it just me or is there not some fascinating engineering going on here that might be worthy of such detailed analysis and discussion rather than all this froth?

So give us more P2-related stuff to talk about then. The odd picture of a bit of metal isn't going to generate much discussion.

    Exactly
The P2 disturbed track (long rigid wheelbase),broke crank axles and used a lot of coal according to Chapelon.
Today it would not be able to run anywhere UK due to shrinking gauge.

All of which has been addressed in this new build - go and thoroughly read the technical section of the P2 website. It will run anywhere that Tornado can: it is a lot more gauge-friendly than a King.

You can find many answers in the 'Design Study' section of the P2 website, the page is routinely updated as further progress is made refining the design.

    https://www.p2steam.com/design-study/

For instance, what is this image doing there? Discuss!

Horses for courses. You can have both. Conversations about riveting are not always riveting.

You are putting a Worthington feedwater heater on it and a chimney which can be lowered in tunnels?

I sympathise with your comment but on the other hand, when one tries to get engineering info, there is usually little response. There was a discussion recently about whether the horns for the trailing axle were machined to a 14ft or whatever radius or whether they were straight - (and please correct me if I missed this) - but I don't recall seeing any response from those close to the A1/P2 team. (I am still interested in the answer, and apologies again if this is on the site)

I used to love watching those on foggy, frosty nights. You could follow the progress of a train quite easily in fog; just look for the eerie blue glow travelling along the horizon...

Crossed wires! (Pardon the pun!) what I meant was the design of those little stickers that warn of the dangers of the 25,000 volts in the overhead catenary.
