Might not be the longest out of use yet but 30841 seems destined to take the crown in due course.

Certainly the frames and wheels do and isn't the boiler on 825?

Aren't the frames from 30841 regarded as being unfit for further use due to distortions? I think that's why the NYMR's used the frames of 30825 in the S15's reconstruction, and its identity has consequently changed.

Yes I think that is the case, but AFAIK the 841 frames are extant ergo the loco technically still exists, based on the convention of frames = identity?

If we are talking preserved line locos as well as mainline, SE&CR P class No. 27 last ran in 1974. It is now being overhauled (though in practical terms, that has meant new frames and cylinders and will mean a largely new boiler) and should run before it gets to the fifty year anniversary of its last revenue-earning trip!

    http://wainrightsfinestsecr27.blogspot.co.uk/

Frames ≠ identity :) We've been there lots of times before.

Given that whole or partial frame replacement on locos is hardly new (one of the Urie S15s at the MHR has had substantial frame replacement at its latest overhaul) the state of the frames doesn't seem a blocker to resurrecting the loco, were it so desired. A bigger issue I suspect is that there is an imbalance between boilers and frames amongst the S15s: there are seven locos and seven boilers, but the MHR-based locos collectively have a spare boiler, and the NYMR-based locos are one short.

So if there was a will, I see no reason why 841 couldn't run again, though it would be substantially new build were it ever to do so. Which then raises the question as to whether, given the likely level of resource required, how high up anyone's priority list it would be in an environment where resources are always scarce and worthy projects legion.

at least it is technically in an overhaul queue. I think the GWS need to bite the bullet and prepare and conserve the locos which are effectively museum displays now. Indeed they have repainted several locos, which I assume is an admission that they have no prospect of overhaul in the next short or medium term.

I think they've moved 6697 into the workshops with 3650, though whether it's just for a repaint or something better I don't know.

I always enjoy visiting Didcot, but it's kind of sad, Cookham especially was always one of my favourites, but now it's got holes in its tender and isn't in as good cosmetic condition as most of the others in there... still, at least it's better than 5572, whose paintwork is awful. Though I think soon to be renewed?

Can I throw a couple of NRM examples into the mix?

T9 - Hasn't this been gifted to a pres line somewhere & due to be returned to working nick again?

850 Lord Nelson - IIRC based at the mid hants & apparently not too far off returning to action again.

Super D 49395 - Believe this has passed to the NYMR now & that it's due to make a comeback in the near future.

Others I'm looking forward to seeing are:

71000 Duke Of Gloucester - Changed hands a couple of years ago & having a few bits re-engineered so hopefully back to full health soon.

60532 Blue Peter - Been away way too long & now part of the hosking empire so will be well cared for.

The T9 and Lord Nelson are hardly back of the shed locos, unless you mean the T3 gifted to Swanage, in which case that's never been in the shed at all! Unless this is breaking news, I think you just had a nice dream about the Super D. :(

Sorry my mistake it's the T3 that's been gifted by NRM. I put lord nelson in because I can't remember it having worked in a good few years.

Super D, feck knows what's going on with it but I remembered hearing NYMR involved somewhere with it.

Mr Waterman wants to do something with the 'super D' as it's not his loco though if anything does happen I'll believe it when I see it.

The NYMR ran the Super D for a while, but no longer has any involvement with it AKAIK, and has no plans to be. On the other hand, if the opportunity arose to bring the Q7 back to the NYMR on a long term basis, I hope very much hope it would be taken!

I'd say that continuous (recorded) history is what counts, No 27 is having new frames and cylinders (sorry, but that made it all sound too easy) amongst other parts, BUT since they are NEW components, made specifically for No 27, then the resultant locomotive is still No 27, whereas if, perish such a thought another P class (one of those stored in Chrystal Palace tunnel from the strategic reserve?) was to be scrapped in order to provide the parts, then the result would not be No 27, although I've no doubt that many would say that Ashford Works did it all the time. Basically my view is that New components and a continuous history is O.K.

    How about Mallard ?

The NRM has shown an ability to milk what it can from Scotsman and surely Mallard would fall into the same category
