Think what it must have been like to fire a J70 on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway with an overload of fruit vans in the summer...

Yes :) But if you want noise, a single is the way to go!

According to the excellent LNER Encyclopaedia, the double-chimneyed V2s were of comparable power to a Pacific.

I think it should be 1/8" to be correct. A lot of preserved locos have somewhat wider orange lines, though.

And separate cylinders - Those outside steam pipes give it a more purposeful look.

Stuff the noise - give me efficiency...

Oh, and whilst you're at it give it another bogie axle and an 8 wheel tender. ;)

A new build of a different slant. The GWR had a couple of 1 off design 4 wheel tenders. New building one of those to give a bit of extra range to a castle or the 47xx maybe...

You have to compare a standard version Austerity with one that has been modified in the "front end" to see the disadvantages of the standard arrangement, they are ok but could be better is my take on it. I've not had a go on a Lempor fitted example but with the Giesel version which certainly shows the bog standard version is in need of the uplift which a Lempor would give.

As for the comments regarding length of run like anything it's 'horses for courses' and I wouldn't want to go a long way with a Class P or indeed a Jinty without ensuring there are plenty of places to take water, but a Austerity is well capable to do similar work and some of the opinions you sometimes hear are generally from the "it's only any good if it's ex BR brigade".

I’m not surprised you can’t see, the spectacle glass needs a clean

There is perhaps a serious topic to be raised about new build of existing classes where the existing locos are, for want of a better word, knackered or they are useful types that weren't preserved in sufficient numbers (the perfect cure for all those over-powered Bullieds etc, etc, blah blah blah). V2, Dean Goods etc

What about 102, 103 or 104? (After all, if there is a desire to fill the gaps in GWR loco development then those three are important and also missing)

I'd happily see the balance redressed: I wonder how different the scene would have been if Dai Woodham had been as efficient in cutting locomotives as say, Cohen's or the various other yards in the Eastern Region.

Personally, I'd love to see a recreation of 1470 Great Northern in as-built condition - but I'd pity the poor devil who had to fire it... plus IIRC it would not be gauge-friendly.

Or if Cohen’s had been less rapid in their cutting. LNER is somewhat the poor relation when it comes to preserved locos. But yes, you wonder what the preservation scene would look like if the Thompson and Peppercorn Pacifics had gone to Barry and the bullieds and gwr locos had gone to Cohen’s. V1s instead of Prairies, j50s instead of panniers, b1s instead of manors, v2s instead of halls etc etc.

In a parallel world there’s is a crazy scheme to new build a hall and a West Country.

I don’t want to start giving people ideas.
