I happened across this loco whilst out for a stroll this afternoon, as you do, and wondered if anyone could shed any light on why it should be resting in a hauliers yard in the West Midlands.

Could it be the mock up built for the recent Murder on the Orient Express, or is it a real loco. If so, I suspect gauging might be an issue on most lines. I would be interested to know where it is heading if anyone knows anything :)

If it was built for the film, wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to hire an exiting loco somewhere in Europe and film there?

The whole train was built especially for the film, and pretty much the entire film, certainly the train journey, was filmed at Longcross Studios in Surrey - including an exterior set about 30 feet in the air with that beauty on top of it!

The loco was derailed and tilted sideways at one point (not good for a real steam loco!), but I suspect they wanted to use a studio to keep the ending secret! ;)

Wondered what had happened to the train they built. Any sign of the coaches?

Just the loco, standing on a short length of temporary track, as far as I could see.

Looks like it might be useful in winter with that buffer beam snowplough. ;)

    Many thanks.

Think this was linked on here before but this seems to have been a pretty impressive piece of engineering - pictures of the loco being built - http://modeleng.proboards.com/thread/12223/murder-orient-express-film-build

This shows 'how it was done' too - https://www.atlasofwonders.com/2017/10/murder-orient-express-filming-locations.html

Wonder what has happened to the 4 coaches (all mounted on Gresley bogies!)

Seeing this locomotive it makes me thinking that this must be a cheaper alternative to many of the proposed full operational locos mentioned in another thread;) Also, no need to consider about the british loading gauge when you have a static replica to "drive":D

The loco and carriages have now made their way to Bassenthwaite Lake Station in the Lake District - not a bad setting, given the Alpine look of its surroundings. They'll form part of the redevelopment of the station as a cafe and holiday accommodation. Here's the planning aplpication: https://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/swi...arch%20Criteria%3C%2Fa%3E'>Search Results</a>

There are some phots knocking about on Facebook. I'll see if I can find them again.

Hi, I was looking into to this locomotive and I can tell you it's current location with tender and 3 carriages.
It very recently arrived at what used to be Bassenthwaite Lake Station in NW Cumbria inside the boundaries for the Lake District National Park. The line was removed many years ago from what I know but a local family have acquired this train and are going to restore the old station waiting room as well.
The track it was sat on down in Stoke and what I assume (need to find out for sure) was also used at the studios at Longcross were made in Workington (North Cumbria coast) at the British Steel plant, when this family acquired the locomotive they noticed the tracks had Workington stamped into them so the train is now sat on them up here in Cumbria.

Seeing this reminds me of the similar "new build" for the Mission Impossible film - has that now met its end in Derbyshire? Someone living nearby must have heard a loud bang if it has!

I'm puzzled - is there still a loco t Bassenthwaite ? Presumably, if there is, there must have been two "replicas", or was the Bassenthwaite venture just the carriages with the loco for some short-term storage and publicity?

The Engine at Bassenthwaite is separate entity. Used in the Murder on the Orient Express with Kenneth Branner.
The General with Tom was a purpose built loco destined for the long drop from day 1.

An article I found on "Murder on The Orient Express" said that two replica locos were built for that film. Could it be that the second became the basis of the MI example? It seems stretching coincidence for three Britannia-like mock ups to have been built for two separate films! Is there anyone who can give authoritative chapter and verse on this story?
