Sorry my report is slightly late this week (been up to my eyeballs in it lately)
The gang have all been busy with the Conflat getting some more sign writing on her before the rain set in at the weekend.
143 (a bit of a forgotten project) got a coat of under coat on her rock side, and a light sanding of the rest of this side of her body.
Mean while the fitness to run Exams haven't thrown up anything unexpected.
While there is no goods on the gala this year, wagon fans will be pleased to know that we are running a series of 4 days to re-train guards on goods work. These will be diesel hauled, the first one being Saturday March 24th, the train Departs Bewdley at 10.45 arriving in Bridgnorth at 12 noon, returns at 12.50 getting into Bewdley at 14.09, departs Bewdley again at 14.45 getting into Bridgnorth at 16.00, leaves Bridgnorth at 16.50 and returns to Bewdley at 18.09, the locomotive is meant to be the 37. Obviously this could be an interesting photographic opportunity, if you want more details, p.m. me and I'll try to respond.

Bewdley has been a hive of activity again recently.
A couple of weeks ago we had the goods train out to re-certify some of our guards on goods work, with a goods gala coming up in June to celebrate 100 years of 2857 we will be needing them.
Many thanks to those who turned out to photograph the goods in action, and also to those who came to say hello on gala and open house weekend.
In recent weeks, 143 has received a coat of under coat while the brown top coat is going back on 2303. Underneath 2303 the brakes and running gear are in need of some TLC and this is progressing well.
The rain has been frustrating attempts to get The sign writing finished on the conflat as for very obvious reasons, the gaffer is not keen to sign write it in the pouring rain (and who can really blame him)
The goods is out again this Sunday and is on this occasion booked to have the class 14 (D95xx) at the head although this is subject to change depending on other issues.
    Catch you soon
    Ian

Sorry it has been so Long, life has been rather getting in the way.
Work on the two wagons in the shed has been progressing nicely with 2303's doors getting some new woodwork on them, while the repairs to the roof is also going nicely.
One of these days I'll get out of the machine shop and into the sunlight but work on 2303's brakes is also going Well, if a little slower than I'd hoped.
The lads have taken advantage of the good weather and got on with cleaning down and painting the frames on the SECR wagon, while the gaffer has been doing some sign writing on the conflat.
17410 has been to Bristol to have her tyres turned and is now back with us and back together, Kidderminster C&W having finished the job off, look out for her in June.
We still need to have to have the buffers out of the SECR before we go much further, but hopefully we'll be hearing more about this wagon very soon.
    Take care

I didn't realise it had been quite so long since my last post, as you can tell, silly season is here again, where I have too many things to do and not enough Ian's to do them!
I'm sure the goods weekend celebrating 100 years of 2857 won't have escaped anyone's notice on here, and over the weekend, we ran a couple of goods trains, one with our own wagons and one with some wagons hired in from GBRF, so showing typical goods trains of the early half of both the 20th and 21st centuries. Unfortunately this time the southern brake van went a bit sick, thankfully nothing to serious, and a repair will be carried out as soon as we get chance.
17410 took her bow in public service, and the work done by the LNER coach lads along with her trip to Kidder carriage works and Bristol seems to have worked wonders, the wheels are now the proper shape and she doesn't tend to waddle any more.
2303s brakes are still giving me planty to think about, with most of the pins now made, my thoughts turn to re-bushing the drop links and to straightening some of the brake rodding which seems to have taken a bit of a battering over the years, hopefully nothing a little warm with oxy-acetelene wont put right.
The SECR wagon has been the biggest beneficiary of this recent nice weather with the lads taking the oppotunity to chip away at cleaning and painting the frames, while the issue with one buffer has also been attended to the problem being the tinyest of nicks out of the 'L' shaped pin, causing it to creap under the headstock, a quick squeeze of the buffer, and a change of the pin, and the buffer is as good as new, our attentions must now turn to other areas on this wagon.
The LMS brake van is getting some TLC too in the shape of new step boards, these are nesseasry as the old ones have rotted and become unsafe now, this was picked up on her fitness to run exam in March, and proves the value of the exam.
We will be busy bees in the coming weeks I suspect, and as summer approaches, pressures on all of our time, from Holidays and footplate work may make these updates a little hit and miss in their nature so please bare with me.

Nice collection of wagons at Highley yesterday, although the 33 looked out of place heading them up upload_2018-6-24_21-19-31.png .

Sorry to have abandoned you for so long, those of you who know me know I've been racing round like a mad thin, but while I have been chasing my own tail, the lads have been busy.
The pads on 55577 didn't hold up to goods weekend as well as we might have hoped, so the wagon was stopped for the Sunday, the wagon is now waiting for some new pads as the old ones are well and truly shot to bits.
The LMS brake van was stopped before the big weekend owing to the condition of the step boards. while this was a bit of a disappointment at the time (Especially with the van belonging to the 2857 society) however had someone had a fall as a result of the condition of the step boards, it could have been nasty so we had no choice. As it happens, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We needed to move something out of No 1 siding for a few weeks, so the obvious vehicle to move was the LMS brake, making it easier for us to do all the other work which was going to become needed in a few years. Repairs have now been carried out to the handrail fixing points, the veranda floors, the step boards, the wagon has had a repaint, the brakes have been adjusted and the wagon will soon be released again.
The conflat is also waiting to be shunted out now, so attention will hopefully turn to SECR open 12252 and 2303.
Work on the SECR wagon has been going at a snails pace owing to other more pressing issues, but it is progressing with the frames getting painted as time permits. she has had a damaged buffer retaining pin replaced, with luck, work will soon be able to commence on her floor and brake push rods. She has also had a new drawbar spring sourced to replace the damaged one.
Inside the shed, work on 2303 is sneaking slowly forward with 3 out of the 8 brake drop links repaired now. so far they have produced 3 different shapes as well, which has given our resident machinist some head aches.
I won't be here next week as I'm off to Buckfastleigh so I shall see you soon, Olly

Finally, I've got some time to write this, sorry I've been AWOL again, but life has been a little hectic.
The boys have been busy as ever, starting out in the yard, the conflat is still waiting for that shunt to occur, as is the LM brake van, hopefully this will be happening in the next week or two.
The SECR wagon has had her door hinges re-attatched and thoughts have turned to sticking bits of tree back on her. Work on her running gear has come to a halt at the moment pending materials, but despite appearences this vehicle is getting close, the weather has knocked progress on this, the hot summer made working outside in the direct sunlight unpleasent, but hopefully things will start to move along on this.
2303 is progressing well, the brake gear is finished following a bit of a run of good luck on the run up to gala, mean while the lads got the new canvas hung and nailed down over gala weekend. This is deceptively hard work, as one colleague of mine said if your knuckles aren't white when you finish the job, you weren't pulling hard enough. The idea being to pull the canvass tight and force it down onto the yellow goo that is canvass bedding compound, and nail it down to the roof. This is followed by several weeks of watching paint be absorbed into the canvass, the process being, coat the canvass in a mix of paint and linseed oil, get it to look nice and even, go home, come back a few days later, think "I'm sure I painted that last week," and start over again, whilst trying not to drip the thinned down paint onto the sides of the wagon.
101961 at the North end of the shed is getting new doors, and a new canvass on the roof, and I am actually ahead of the game on the brake gear, for the time being at least. and the way the lads are getting on with the bodywork we could have three wagons out in quick succession.
Hopefully I'll manage at least one more up date this side of Christmas so see you all soon!

I seem to keep having to say sorry for being slow in posting, I'm sure most of you are aware of why this is, things are a little busy for me right now, however, the lads have been hard at it.
The SECR wagon now has a floor trial fitted, the work on the frames is complete and the bottom end is just waiting for the delivery of some steel for two new push rods.
The Mica B is back in for hopefully a light repair, although how many times have we said this?
The two wagons in the shed are progressing well with the second coat of paint going on 2303, while the new doors are going on 101691.
I have been keeping busy in the machine shop making various parts currently for 101691, so have been slightly isolated from the rest of the group.
We have a huge variety of different jobs on the department, from the obvious cleaning and painting to Machining, welding, wood work, to name but a few, if anyone fancies giving us a hand, please contact the VLO and ask to join the Wagon department.

Once more the down yard at Bewdley has been a hive of activity. the floor planks have been cut and the cut outs needed for various bolt and rivet heads cut. This can be a bit of a pain, as sometimes you need to take a plank out several times to get it to fit. The planks for the sides are in the goods shed, being painted in the dry while the material has arrived for the new brake push rods. The wagon will be coming inside to have this fitted in the goods shed.
Now anyone who thinks "Goods shed" = "Warm and dry" has never been in one. It's dry and fairly weather proof, but in the depths of winter, the lads have been known to go outside for a warm.
2303 is ready to come out outside to have the bits on the chassis finished off. The lads will have plenty of bits of new brake rigging to paint foe a start! This of course means this vehicle isn't far away now.
101961 is also progressing well, the new doors having been fitted, and tweaked to make them a good fit, a Process of try it, see where it's tight, chisel some off, try it again, utter an Anglo-Saxon oath, shave a bit more off, try again, more Anglo-Saxon, and so on until its right.
Some old brake drop links are in the process of being repaired, they will need a drop of electric glue before they go back on, although I haven't chatted to our resident welder on the matter yet, so shhhhhh, don't say anything.
The Mica B is waiting it's turn for attention, there are some rather rotten bits on the body and a bit of work underneath too, but at the moment it's starting with a thorough clean, being white it shows up the grime.
Hopefully the next few weeks will continue to have such swift progress.
    Catch you soon,
    Olly

I think my new years resolution will have to be to be a bit more reliable in providing updates!
We've had a bit of a shunt round to get the SECR wagon inside. This has allowed us to start fitting side planks in the dry (notice I didn't use the word "warm") with the river side of the wagon coming together nicely.
Underneath, the vehicle still needs some brake push rods making, hopefully these will be done either Christmas week or early January.
101961 is progressing nicely, with the first coat of top coat going on, and the new doors fitted. The final coat of paint won't be on until after the roof canvass is done to prevent damage from dripping.
2303 is receiving new step boards as the newness had rather gone off the old ones, but hopefully this attractive little wagon will be back out soon. Hopefully the paint job will last as well as the 17 years given by the previous one (I wish the paint job in my living room would last that long!)
Finally the Mica B which has had some preliminary work done on it, cleaning her up etc. The plan is to take a look at why the timber hasn't fared so well on this one, as she had a lot of new timber during a very drawn out repair a few years back. Hopefully there won't be any other horror stories.
I will as always start a new thread in the new year, probably with the usual imaginative title, so all that remains is for me to wish all of my readers a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2019.
