The Narrow Gauge section of National Preservation loiters despondently in the lower levels of the list of sections - 8 sections below the main Heritage Railways in the UK. It's even after 'Everything else heritage'. A request many months ago to the then Owner to consider this got no reply.
Please vote if you'd like to have the Narrow Gauge section moved higher - to just after the main Heritage Railway section (BTW, could Uk be changed to UK in that section's title?).
Narrow Gauge lines make up a very important sector of the Heritage Railway world, and could be said to have started the preservation movement. Let's see that reflected by a suitable position in the Forum section list!

That has been bugging me for years!!

    Another couple that need fixed:

railways instead of Railways in "Heritage railways & Centres in the Uk"
events instead of Events in "Galas and events"
rolling instead of Rolling in "Heritage rolling Stock"
else instead of Else in "Everything else Heritage"
on instead of On in "What's Going on"

Although I "get" where this is coming from, there's a big difference between pulling a thread from an existing tapestry and creating a whole new tapestry.

Regardless of gauge, there's a whole world between the Snowdon Mountain operation and anything else this side of the channel. Then there's the 'point of departure' between the 20" gauge North Bay Railway - a line with a truly "miniature" credentials and the 15" of La'al Ratty, the RH&D and Bure Valley which further muddies the waters ... before deciding where operations such as Kirklees or Groudle Glen fit into the grand scheme of things. Did anyone say "Wells and Walsingham"?

I'm not suggesting things couldn't be arranged more logically, but would urge wider discussion to establish what's logical to who (and why) before any changes are made.

I think you have misunderstood what Martin is suggesting. There is no suggestion of creating a new section of the forum - we already have narrow gauge and miniature railways sections.
The suggestion is to move it further up the headings list so that it sits, for example, just below Diesel & Electric Traction on the main page.

Perhaps the headings should be ranked according to the number of "hits" they receive..

I must admit that I never look at the forums list, I just use the new posts list and go from there. I do follow the vast majority of the railway posts be it standard or narrow gauge. The posts that I tend to show as read without reading them, tend to be on new general chat :)

Sadly this is all above the Moderator/Admin's pay grade. So dream on. By the way- "need fixing" not "need fixed". Oh, the irony. :)

"Need fixed" is a perfectly acceptable English variant of "need fixing". I write as a professor of Linguistics!

I'm unclear from your message whether you mean the Owner is unable to change section titles or the order of sections (which would appear to be bizarre), or whether you mean that a Moderator/Admin (whatever that is) can't do so?
I'm assuming the Forum Owner can make any of these changes, and it is to the new Owner that this poll is directed.

I do the same. There seem to be fewer new posts these days, though. Whether that is the time of year, the weather or people just not bothering with this forum so much I don't know

Sorry, but no irony has been detected...
In this context "need fixed" is a contraction of "need to be fixed" and is therefore perfectly valid in my statement.
Meirion Gwril has also confirmed that this is an acceptable variant.

I find your attitude of "Dream on" somewhat strange. Could you not simply have referred the requests to @admin or @Conrad Windham instead of being so dismissive?

Just a few pieces of information for you about this matter. All comments are personal.

The list of main sections is part of the architecture of the website and it is therefore not something that can be moved around except by the web designers under instruction from the new site owner.

Errors in wording and titles for the sections - the list in #2 - are similarly changes that can only be made by the designers. The title of a new thread posted by a member is, however, something that a Moderator or Admin can tweak.

Where a section appears has no bearing on its accessibility or 'hit' rate. Neither will moving it make any difference to its popularity.

As is the case with other sections, there is no strict hierarchy at work here (for example by ordering on 'hit' count) and each has equal status in that respect. Were that to be the case then New General Chat would go to near the top (and I, personally, would definitely not favour that)

'Need fixed' ? that's not English, We all know that it should have said 'needs fixing' or 'needs to be fixed' assuming we are talking about a collective noun (singular) for couple rather than the list in the thread which is more than a couple. But this is just a chat room after all.

Time for a new thread on correct English (rather than American). Learnt v learned and all that. ;)
