Bit of a 'technicality' but suppose you are right, to my mind its always 71000 that deserves that badge.

I get your point but Merchant 18 emerged two years after DoG and that gave plenty of time to, for example, make decisions about valve gear. It's probably for another thread but DoG was a one-off development from the Britannia whereas the rebuilt Bulleid Pacific was a much more considered and extensive remodelling. And for certain, if you were used to seeing steam at York then a MN turning up would have been a pleasant surprise just as much as a copper capped loco.

No do please keep it. It's a logical extension to the Carnforth stable even though it may seem a bit of a foreigner. And let's be honest, Tangmere was not really a good fit and City of Wells is not available.

No need to debate. It just ain't the same as it used to be which is why many of us don't mainline anymore. Such a shame. Mind you, maybe I should reconsider because You Tube clips reveal loads of window hangers who are flouting the rules. I thought the rules applied to the support crews too. Not on this occasion is seems!!

Pedant mode - textual correction made.

The stewards have a difficult job monitoring the vestibules but they are familiar with the route - especially locations where overhanging vegetation can cause injury - hence appear to use discretion if photographers take note of appropriate warnings. They know the "regular" customers - especially those who wish to take photographs from the train - and will ensure that photographs from windows are only taken at "safe" locations. As the photographer I can confirm that the stewards were in attendance whilst I took the photographs - and used their discretion. The image at Holgate was taken with the steward insisting that I withdrew from the window before the coach joined the main line; the departure from York was allowed because the exit was on to a single line but I was cautioned regarding overhanging vegetation. In both cases I was granted a privilege by an attending steward who was made aware by me beforehand of the image being taken (i.e. on curves) and monitored my activity to ensure the minimum time was taken.

Whilst I do not wish to start a discussion on the pros and cons of taking photographs from train windows or place the stewards' right of discretion in jeopardy I feel it only fair to point out that the ultimate responsibility is that of the photographer and he MUST liaise with the stewards on the day and accept their decision - without question. In the case of my photography of the SSE once I had taken the 2 images shown I returned to my seat and took no further photographs until the train had arrived at the Scarborough platform.

Oh I see. So that's how it now works. Crikey, a lot of effort just to take a photo. I look back just a few years when I have filmed steam from the vestibule on the curvy climb to Dainton, - fantastic footage, Exeter St Davids to Central, out of Bradford etc. Sad that those days are now over. On You Tube there are hundreds of vids by passengers filming from the vestibule and some are indeed fantastic and memorable. That we will no longer have access to such footage is very sad. Nothing much has changed in that the trains are the same, the overhanging vegetation is the same but not the rules and regulations it seems.

Correct, the rules and regulations have been changed in an attempt to protect those who do not have the common sense to protect themselves, so the majority suffer as a consequence.

I thought that the rules had not changed it was just that they we being enforced owing to the incident on the footplate at Wootton Basset. I would imagine that any current relaxation of the rule is that it can become oppressively hot in a Mk. 1. in mid Summer. Anyway wasn't the rule 'do not lean' as against do not look.

I thought the signs àdvising people not to lean out of the windows had always been there. Going back to the 60s at least

Sometimes altered by spotters to read 'Do not clean soot off the windows.'

I know everyone might not agree but Mr Smith has really done well running BIL on the SSE.
The engine should be ready for all tasks by the end of the Scarboroughs

I agree with you. Have also seen something that looks official saying that even in this 'supported steam' environment the only locos that can run are those with ashpan sprays. BIL definitely has one. Don't know about the rest of the Carnforth stable though........

Is an ashpan douser not a mandatory requirement for certification? I'm sure the one fitted to 42765 by @ianriley during its original restoration was partly with a view to compliance in that regard as MT276 was the default standard at the time which has since been incorporated into Group Standards.
